Chris Pratt is such an annoying personality. I don't know ANYONE who wants his voice acting or his presence in this film outside of really young kids who don't know enough about him to dislike him the way gaming does. But, good on his agent for getting him into this thing. I'm watching but its going to be a grit my teeth and bear it while I focus on Peach and Bowser and Toad and Kong.

I'm impressed that they seem to be drawing from so many games. I would have expected them to start simple and leave plenty on the table for sequels. As far as the voice goes, the extreme caricature that we know of as Mario's voice would be both grating and disrespectful in a feature-length movie where presumably Mario does a fair amount of talking. But simply ignoring all that history and just having Pratt use his own voice seems like a bad solution to a thorny problem.

This looks ... interesting ... though I slightly fear Nintendo going further down the road of game/film tie-ins if it makes big money. Mario Kart (as featured) is so far the biggest seller on the Switch, but in 2nd place at over 40 million units is Animal Crossing: New Horizons. I could see Peter Jackson enthusiastically directing a 9.5 hour Animal Crossing trilogy where nothing much happens apart from some mild Tom Nook financial shenanigans {shudders}.

I know it’s canon and the movie probably has enough other faults that it doesn’t need me to add more, but Princess Peach is the only female character? Really? Not even one of the toadstools who were only there as a punchline?

I dunno, guys, after the teaser trailer came out with its two lines of Mario dialogue, I was on board the Pratt hate train. ( Especially in comparison to Jack Black's voice work; that guy is just too talented to exist.)

There's a lot more dialogue in this one, though, and, I dunno, it's not that bad? He kind of nailed the little "wa-hoo" at the end, even. I'm starting to think that maybe 90 minutes of "It's-a thick-a stereotype-a acc-a-cent-a" might have ended up being a little bit grating?

Video games surprisingly just didn't stick with me after I guess middle school. I became more of a, "wander around in the woods alone" kinda kid (still am!), rather than a "Super Smash Bros sleepover" kinda kid (which I people my age still are). And also: did Pratt get this much shit for playing it straight in The LEGO Movie? How do we know the producers of Mario didn't say "yeah, we want that same positive energy you did for that movie?". How is Charlie Day voicing a neurotic character excellent acting, but Pratt doing Emmett isn't?

It does. I would probably have more fun watching my friend's kid play Mario Maker or something and.... *takes deep breath, about to go on a rant*

> I can tell you 11-year-old Fleebnork Jr. is beyond hyped for this movie, though.

Oh right. I technically don't even play any of these games any more (unless I'm watching my friend's kid play Mario Maker or we're racing in Mario Kart) and this is made by the same animation house that brought us the Minions, ugh.

And the first time they tried to make a movie out of this franchise we ended up with something that barely even resembled the game or Mario universe, and it featured Dennis Hopper as a perverted lizard.

And by my own account it was highly traumatic if you happened to make the mistake of eating a certain kind of party favor and you went to see it in the theaters while barely a young adult.

If I put myself in my friend's kid's shoes and knowing how much he knows about the franchise he will probably really appreciate all the nods and bits of history and fan service that's apparently going to be in the movie.

Anyway, what's the under-over that there's at least one fart joke wedged in there? We are talking about Illumination, here.

The original live-action movie was weirdly vindicating for 11 year old me. Having seen a bunch of animated adaptations of 'grown-up' properties (Ghostbusters, Beetlejuice, Police Academy) I knew that certain liberties were always taken and that the source material usually had only a superficial resemblance at best to what we got for afternoon cartoons. That Super Mario Bros. ended up so weird despite going in the opposite adaptational direction was--at the time--proof that it should be taken seriously.

This doesn't look bad, exactly, but it looks pretty rote. I do know that I would have loved to see it when I was a kid. I was baffled by the one that did arrive at that time, but by then I was old enough to know that Hollywood people didn't take stories seriously and you got what you got.

I couldn't tell from that first teaser but now that we have a trailer...Chris Pratt's Mario is fine? I actually like that it veers into Martinet territory occasionally and since Martinet is credited in the film I wonder if Mario's voice eventually evolves into that.

greenland jr. made us watch it over and over, spotting allll the references to the games they've played. Rainbow Road was a particularly great reveal and they really want to know more about Peach's 1.) Giant ax. 2.) Fire abilities.

As long as the humor is not too mean, I'm looking forward to a joyful Mario movie.

And the less that's said about the show's retooling into Club Mario the better because it's the ur-example of how to lazily cash in on a brand you have the television rights to (and it's also peak 90s trash which is saying something because it only aired in 1990)

I still maintain that Jack Black was brilliant casting, because Black can't help but let a little goofiness leak through, even in his serious roles, and the thing about Bowser is that underneath the giant lava-filled castles and diabolical dark magic, and then underneath the attentive over-spoiling dad, is an absolute insecure goofball. Jack Black absolutely would spot that, not least because he has definitely played a Mario game.

Who goes to see a movie because of an actor anymore?

The Hollywood promotion machine is kind of set up for stars to promote movies, and Chris Pratt is one of those people who gets to go on talkshows and Entertainment Tonight and suchlike. Presumably that's why he was cast.

Needs a Mad Men-esque subplot where Mario occasionally travels to a construction site to hang out with a girl named Pauline, who knows him as Jumpman.

One of the characters cast was the foreman from Mario Bros., so at least that part is in there, but it looks like Mario and Donkey Kong's grudge will be a little different in the movie.

You must have played a different version of the Mario games than I did. In the ones I played, Mario bumbled constantly from place to place. He frequently missed his jumps, or jumped when he didn't need to. It would take him two or three tries jump up and hit things in the air or land at a specific point. And so much dying! Dying, dying, dying dozens or even hundreds of times before finally making it to the end and rescuing the princess.

There's a fan theory that when Mario overthrows Bowser, conquering the Mushroom Kingdom, he grows old and greedy, and becomes Wario and that it's his son Baby Mario grown up (or maybe the actor who played Mario in Super Mario Bros 3, which is a stage play about Mario) who races cars and plays tennis against Wario. (Waluigi is just another guy who Old Mario/Wario brought in to replace Luigi. Poor Luigi.)

So if they're going with that timeline, maybe they hired Pratt so that he can become the annoying villain in the next movie.

I can confirm that Mario is fairly bumbling. My son's favorite thing in the 3D games is to deliberately step in lava so that Mario runs around clutching his smoking butt and screaming "Waaahahahahahaaaa!"

My son nearly wets himself in excitement every time a new teaser or trailer drops for this. He also disapproves of the lack of thick pseudo-Italian accent, but almost every kid in the 10-12 range is a huge stickler for "correct" versions. I think mine would most prefer if the movie were just literally a filmed version of someone playing a Mario game, including picking up hundreds of individual gold coins and putting them in his pockets.

  • Digging Ditches: Curse Of The Lode Runner
  • Drol, Man In A Hoversuit.
  • Code Name Arcticfox.
  • Rook: The True Story Of Battle Chess.
  • Gemstone, The Path From Warrior To Healer
  • Rain God: The Lemonade Stand Experience
  • Why Are There No Turns On This Endless Nightmare Highway, The Real Story Of Spy Patrol
Just sayin', there's a lot possibilities here. Hell, somebody go talk to that M.U.L.E guy, I bet he's got some stories. I mean, damn, they took the whole Moon Patrol guy's life and made it a footnote in the first Mass Effect, and that wasn't even a movie? Where's the justice in that?
