God, trials is mesmerizing.

You can't ride a bicycle across the top of a tennis net! He's doing Tony Hawk Pro Skater moves in real life, wild.

Also, what's up with the vestigial seat on the bike? Is there a reason for it to be there? You clearly can't sit on it.

The "seat" helps one balance by sort of putting a little English on it with your thighs and such, to nudge the bike. So says my source, anyway. I'd keel right over immediately.

I guess I'm at the age now where I worry about the damage to the fixtures on the buildings and the man and dogs that he scared/surprised by landing right in front of them...

Being that this is California, they probably spent at least six months getting permission from relevant authorities and organizations, lest they be sued upon completion of filming, and very likely had lookouts warning people in the vicinity (I mean, I've been caught & warned by a lookout for a car commercial [they didn't want me in-frame, thanks for the ego deflation guys!] so it's fairly likely nobody was caught entirely unawares).

I just checked in with a friend who works for the Park Service. it took years to get the permits to film at Alcatraz. and you will note there were no tourists around there.

I'm not sure gravity affects him. Seriously, he's amazing. I've watched a bunch of his videos, which are all incredible, and I didn't think there was much he could do that would be surprising. The tennis net and the chain proved that I was wrong.

I wonder how many bruises and broken bones he's endured to get that good?

I absolutely love his videos, thanks for posting! And the behind the scenes was really interesting. One trick took about 400 attempts over 2 days! I sent both videos to a few different friends with kids - in this era of TikTok influencers and such, I feel like having an adult do a cool thing, and also say, hey, it took a lot of time and perseverance to do that cool thing, is an important thing to see.

Also, it's MacAskill. Can we get a correction in post and tags, for future findability?

A few more comments about filming at Alcatraz:

One of my friends was the ranger "supervising" the shoot on Alcatraz (basically, only making sure they followed the rules.)

Riding bikes inside the cellhouse is prohibited; hence the film of him walking through that area

He apparently popped three sets of tires trying to do that final flip from the rec yard steps. He repeated the move a bunch of times.

The SF Chronicle wrote an article about the filming (archived)- apparently Danny was in SF in 2017 but broke his kneecap at the skate spot at 3rd and Army and obviously had to postpone.

Also, it's MacAskill. Can we get a correction in post and tags, for future findability?

D'oh!! Thanks for pointing this out- I had already asked the mods to fix another spelling mistake in the post because apparently I am a Bear of Very Little Brain. Drives me crazy when names are spelled wrong and I went and did it. :(

Nice. MacAskill a bit quieter than McQueen.

I thought the tennis court thing was amazing, but then…

I did notice there was no toddler along for the ride this time.

Danny MacAskill has brought so much joy to my family and me over the years. His cheerful willingness to fall again and again and again is such a great message to kids whose online lives are filled with polished finished products that beginners can't possibly measure up to.

The Shins as soundtrack surprised me. I'd have expected a SF band this time around (the Grateful Dead's Cassidy would've been great, or maybe China Cat/I Know You Rider) or the Proclaimers/another Scottish song. But that's a nothing-quibble; I'm thrilled he's still at it and still sharing it with the rest of us.
