Nuclear weapons will save the world?

The US National Ignition Facility (NIF) previously:1 2 3 has announced a breakthrough in fusion research. The facility has, for the first time, achieved a fusion reaction yielding more energy than used to ignite the reaction.
Most of the coverage of this focuses on the benefits of civilian fusion energy, but the purpose of the NIF has always been weapons-based, without a mandate to develop civilian power.
