I saw this on FB this morning. I really appreciate what HCR has done here and I think its so important not to reduce the victims of state violence to nothing but their deaths.

I think this is so important. He was a human being, and should be acknowledged as such.

Thank you - I had been looking for his site. He sure seemed like a great guy with an amazing personality. I am heartbroken for his family and loved ones.

There literally are no words to describe the horror of what happened to him.

Curious - this post is just a link to Tyre's site - who is HCR, and what does she have to do with this?

Heather Cox Richardson is a history professor who writes about politics and current events. Here’s the piece she wrote. aiq was crediting Richardson with the link and the idea to remember the life of Tyre Nichols, not only his death.

I am exhausted by the losses to humanity of creativity, spirit, soul, and sensitivity.

the battle over melanin levels
Unlike a lot (most?) similar incidents, this one seems much more about policing than skin color given that all the cops involved were also black.

Conversely, that racism is so deeply and utterly imbued in policing culture in the United States that it infects all officers, even those who are not white.

Exactly this. It's been well documented in numerous studies that both white and black cops, judges, teachers, etc. treat black people more harshly than white people. Racism is insidious and deeply harmful.

I guess assuming that people will behave a certain way based only on visible physical attributes isn't really a safe strategy...
