"The Room" of Talking Animal Movies

Normally the guys at Bloodbath TV (formerly Bloodbath & Beyond) riff on horror movies, but they've made an exception for an absolute baffler of a film called Love on a Leash. It's about a sassy talking dog named Alvin Flang who magically becomes a man each night, falls in love with a woman and spends half his time as her pet and half his time as her boyfriend. Things only get weirder from there.

The Bloodbath boys are a team of affable Canadian goofballs who like to talk about scary movies while they get sloshed. They're part Siskel and Ebert, part Bob and Doug MckEnzie. They've been at it or many years, and recent highlights include The Killing Tree (a movie about a killer Christmas tree), Attack of the 50 Foot Camgirl (from the director of Chopping Mall) and the CGI atrocity Bigfoot vs. Megaladon. They're never better than when they've gotten hold of a real stinker of a film, and Love on a Leash may well be their worst yet.

To be fair, a lot of boyfriends are dogs way more than half the time.

I'm not doubting that it's weird, but is it 'And Then' weird?

(The movie being talked about in the above link is the notoriously baffling Robot in the Family - see also the reactions of Red Letter Media and Gooseworx.

How Did This Get Made? also did an episode on Love on a Leash last fall.

Similar in premise to the Switch game Kitty Love, where the player is a character who spends their nights magically transformed into a cat who gets taken in by handsome single men, and then uses everything they learn in the mens' apartments to date them during the day, hoping for "true love's kiss" to break the spell.

So, half of Ladyhawke, then. (Which kind of defeats the whole point of Ladyhawke, but anyway.)

Not, I suppose, to be confused with Unleashed, a rom-com where Kate's cat and dog first turn into men, then suitors?

Not, I suppose, like Smell the Glove, which demonstrates that instead, by having the man on the leash, there is indeed a fine line between 'clever' and 'stupid'?

I look forward to the manga but I think I’ll skip the Doujin this time, thanks.

if a lot of boyfriends were dogs a lot more of the time, tell me the world would be a worse place and I will call you a liar
