None of these were on my 2023 bingo card

YouTube decided, weirdly, to throw new music at me today. Even weirder is who these new songs are from, all from albums forthcoming this year. Yes has a new song, Cut From The Stars, truly the Ship Of Theseus of rock bands. Also, Extreme seem to be back with a mind-numbing Nuno guitar solo in Rise. And, on the far end of the spectrum, Winger (of all bands) offers up Proud Desperado.

There was a Getting the Band Back Together reality show on VH1 about fifteen years ago give or take. Don’t recall the name; refuse to look it up. They first half hour was the process of tracking everyone down and convincing them to do it. The second half hour was the rehearsal and concert or whatever. The Extreme episode lacked the second half hour because Nuno shut it down before they even got finished asking him. He wanted nothing to do with it. And now here we are.

(spoilers for that episode)

Hmm. What are you doing that YouTube randomly throws music at you?

I get a bunch of unwatchable cooking, woodworking and animal videos (and a few watchable ones).

What are you doing that YouTube randomly throws music at you?

95% of my YouTube suggestions are shit. The other 5% are either 1) mildly interesting but I'm afraid to click on it because one informative video about the standing stones of Scotland might be cool but 35 of them is not, 2) stuff that I didn't know about that I actually will click on (like these videos) or 3) stuff from channels I have watched material from already and will enjoy.

It's rare that "2)" actually ends up being good, and for some reason today....

I also learned that christian hair metal band Stryper put out a new album recently, and I feel like I'm in some weird broken reality where all the timelines are fucked across each other.

@badbobbycase - The show was called Bands Reunited. The episode with The Alarm was awesome! All seem like such lovely guys.

Even old and kinda-jaded guitar dudes are sitting up and paying attention to Nuno's solo on Rise.

I've heard some amazing shredding in recent years from technically adventurous folks like Polyphia and Animals as Leaders, and this new solo absolutely freakin rips. What a fun couple minutes of virtuosity that really fits in and serves a song.

Ship Of Theseus of rock bands

Best description of Yes that I’ve ever heard. I hadn’t realized there’s not an original member left. Last time I saw them 5 years ago-ish I think Jon Anderson was still with them.

Still King Crimson as long as there is Fripp?

King Crimson will always be Fripp. I think Discipline-era Crimson really turned into a whole different band in terms of sound, but it was tough to think of a new name, and easier to promote with the old one. And that's that.

I can't be the only one who's pretty sure Nuno walked in and thought "well... this song is dog shit, but I'm gonna give people at least ONE reason to listen and talk about this"

(cause, really, that solo belongs NOWHERE near this song. or probably any song. it's really fucking impressive, but it works better as a "singer is taking a smoke break" piece at a live show)

Rock bands are becoming more like baseball franchises. You go to a Yes show because you're a Yes fan, not because of who's on the team. You reminisce about the glory days with that one pitcher or drummer. Orchestras have been like this forever.

I live across the street from the high school in Extreme's "Mutha" video.

FWIW, Gary Cherone is extremely Catholic in a way that's kind of irritating IRL, if you needed further reason to dislike him/this song.

It's remarkable how much Jon Davison sounds like Jon Anderson.

His voice, I mean. Although now that I've typed out that sentence, I can't stop staring at their names and marveling at the coincidence.

All Yes needs is Jon Batiste and Jon Bon Jovi to join, and they can change their name to Jon.

Stryper has been putting out new music regularly for the last dozen or so years, and it's all far better than anything they did in the 80s.

Boy, I'm a huge fan of old-school Yes (and King Crimson, for that matter), and even 80's-synth Yes, but that song is... not good. I really like dark sky parks, too.

I think the solo is pretty good (though I'm not much of a guitar solo guy) but the drummer can't match his rhythm changes, so the combination of the two is terrible. Drummer starts out ok, but then solo changes rhythm at about 2:50 and drummer is locked into his boring snare hits, and then he keeps slowing down as guitarist speeds up, and then finally gets bored and just quits playing!

Lars (for example) may not be a technically good drummer, but he knows how to match energy in a guitar solo.

It's an impressive solo, but it's not a good solo. Good solos tell a story--they have a beginning, middle, and end. This is just highly skilled wanking.
