Lance Reddick, ‘The Wire’ and ‘John Wick’ Star, Dies at 60 [Variety] Lance Reddick, who appeared in major TV series like “The Wire,” “Fringe” and “Bosch” and films like the “John Wick” franchise, which is set to debut “John Wick: Chapter 4” next week, died of natural causes Friday morning, Variety has confirmed with his reps. He was 60.

Known for playing hardened police chiefs and other men of authority, Reddick was born in Baltimore on June 7, 1962. He studied music composition and earned a Bachelor of Music from the University of Rochester. He moved to Boston in the ’80s and earned a Master of Fine Arts from Yale in 1994. [...] HBO later cast him as Baltimore police lieutenant Cedric Daniels, one of the leads, on “The Wire” in 2002. He had previously auditioned for the roles of Bubbles (which went to Andre Royo) and William “Bunk” Moreland (Wendell Pierce). Daniels was in charge of the narcotics division and slowly rose through its ranks during the show’s five-season run, butting heads frequently with his superiors. [...] More recently, Reddick starred as Albert Wesker last year on Netflix’s short-lived series “Resident Evil,” an adaptation of the popular zombie video game. He also provided voice work on Season 2 of Amazon’s “The Legend of Vox Machina,” which released in January. His other voice roles included the villain Sylens in two popular PlayStation games, “Horizon: Zero Dawn” and “Horizon: Forbidden West,” which released last year, plus voicing Commander Zavala in the long-running “Destiny” franchise.

This one hurts. Amongst many, many great performances of his, utterly, utterly engaging as Lt. Daniels in The Wire. e.g. 1,2,3 (spoilers obvs.)

edit: was just about to post fizz's wire scene, so swapped it out.

Anyway, re his death so young, as Daniels would say.

Fringe always feels like the forgotten JJ Abrams show, and I keep telling people its probably the best science-fiction thing JJ has ever done and one of those reasons its the best is b/c of the cast. And Lance made what would otherwise feel like a kind of generic role shine bright. Lance had a way of doing that in all his things. I've long been a fan. Hell, he's only in the Wick films for a few minutes at a time but I'm charmed and smiling every moment. I could go on and on about all his other roles. The best thing we can do to honor him is to watch his filmography and marvel at who he was and what he left us.

Natural causes at 60? I wouldn't have thought that possible.

At this point, I think that phrase has transitioned from "Died from disease/old age in a nonspecific way" to "It wasn't an accident, a murder, a suicide, or an overdose and the rest is private." It's less "old people die sometimes" and more "this isn't an unseemly death, just a private one."

. This came as such a complete shock. In Destiny Reddick voiced Commander Zavala, the Titan Vanguard, though he himself played the game as a Warlock main. He was such a supporter of the game and community and was well loved for it.

Since the announcement of his passing, many Guardians have been holding vigils at the Tower where Zavala is a vendor. Godspeed, Mr Reddick. Per Audacia Ad Astra. We’ll see you Starside.

Oh no, what a shock. It seemed like so many Wire vets didn't really go on to such stellar things afterward, so I was thrilled that he made such a fantastic impression on Fringe. And yeah, he always made me smile in John Wick. His voice was amazing. Such a loss.

As others have mentioned here; The Wire.
His story arc was fascinating in that show, so much going on underneath and hinted at.
My own sense was that the choices he made as an actor were about what would work best for the entire enterprise, not just his roles.

RIP and go in grace.

This hit me so much harder than I expected. Then again, for 8+ years, Lance’s voice played in my gaming headset multiple times per week. The Wire and Fringe are both in my top 10 list. I think it may be literally impossible for me to consume more of any other artists’ work from here on out.

The most recent Destiny DLC added a memorial tree to the main social space, with a single bust for a character that was written out years ago. I don’t expect to ever know, but part of me wonders if that was in anticipation of something like this happening.

Eyes up, guardian.

I was really sorry to see the announcement of this yesterday. Like a lot of people I first encountered him on the Wire. In the Times obituary, it included this:

In a 2010 interview with The Miami Herald, Mr. Reddick said the role that particularly stood out for him was one of his smaller ones: a guest appearance on “Law & Order.”

“I played an army captain from Sierra Leone in 2001 before I was cast in ‘The Wire,’” he said, “and I had to learn the Sierra Leone accent. To this day, that’s my favorite character, the character I’m most proud of.”

I've tried to find that clip online but couldn't.

Thanks Fizz. I tried putting something like this together this morning and couldn't get through it. I'm not sure why finding out about Reddick hit my wife and I so hard, other than he seemed to be in many of our very favorite shows over the years. It was always a good day when he'd surprise us with some of his comedic chops.

Maybe we just appreciated his vigilance in holding the line against IHOP.

Rest in peace Lance. Thanks for sharing your many talents with us for a while.

I have to put a word in for him in the Horizon games, as Sylens, a calibre of villain one loves to hate. His delivery always nailed the sentiment of every line, goading Aloy into getting over her own grief/pain, pushing her to better herself, and then goading her even further to make her loathe him, masterfully manipulating her to do what he needed her to do (and, perhaps arguably, what she needed to do). None of that would have hit as well as it did without his performance, and of course Ashly Burch's always on-point response, winding up with teeth-gritted snarling at him.

I'm so sad we won't get to have them have it out in the final game. I really do hope Guerilla writes his character out rather than try to fake it. Have a moment in-game where Aloy talks about how much he meant to her early on, even though they worked at cross purposes in the end. It would be just. And then they can introduce a new villain, perhaps one of the ones left hanging at the end of the previous game....

Damn he was good.

Such an amazing actor. This is a huge loss, and not even two years after the death of one of the other luminaries on The Wire, Michael K. Williams.

What I appreciated so much about him was that while he could be serious and intense, he was also so fucking funny and open to being goofy. His Eric Andre spot blew my mind when I first saw it. He was also in one of the most fucked up episodes of Tim and Eric's Bedtime Stories as well. He was willing to do whatever was asked of him as an actor, and seemed like a genuinely classy, good person.

You will be missed, Mr. Reddick.

He was one the few actors who I think elevated just about everything he was in and he did this in an unusually wide range of show qualities from prestige to schlock (or more accurately what should have been schlock but ended up not being).

As person who is always morbidly curious about causes of death I think this kind of posthumous PR obfuscation is now much more common because the pandemic has politicized unexpected death. Nobody wants their departed loved one to be a datapoint pawn in the anti-vax/pro-vax death attribution wars. That's why so many celebs and even ordinary people are now dying "after a brief illness" or of "natural causes".

He played Sylens in the Playstation series called Horizon... Horizon: Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West. A very major character, kind of the driving force behind the entire epic story of the game. One of the most interesting and certainly the most mysterious character in the game. Not a bad guy... but not a traditional good guy, either.

There's a third and final game planned... not sure how they'll do it without him. His image was used along with his voice. I've enjoyed his other work as well, just wanted to mention this role, as it was pretty big. The series is certainly a bedrock of Sony's video game lineup. (fun games, too)

I’m surprised no one else has mentioned his early work in the proto-HBO prestige drama, Oz, which made me pay attention every time I saw him subsequently.

That was not the first time I spotted him, though — he has a single scene in a first season episode of The West Wing, which made enough of an impression that a year later, watching Oz, I said, “Hey, it’s that guy!” Dude was absolutely magnetic, and I am sorry to see him go.

At this time there is no cause of death other than the police saying apparent natural causes. This means they didn’t see any sign of foul play, suicide, or accident. The public won’t know unless the autopsy details are made public. He doesn’t appear to have been suffering from any known health or substance abuse issues. He posted to Instagram in the days before his death and he showed no signs of acute illness.

Personally, I'm a believer that it's one of the best SF series anyone has ever done, and one of the best cast (even though it seems most of them originally auditioned for other roles). There's a wee vid about the casting here , Reddick was already pitch-perfect as Broyles in the audition tapes.

Via Andrew Wood's twitter, a bit from a Vulture interview with Lance Reddick about his friendship with Keanu Reeves:

How has your friendship changed after four movies?
We’ve gotten to know each other a little better. I hope I don’t get in trouble for telling this story: During John Wick: Chapter Four, my first day of filming happened to be Keanu’s birthday. But he wasn’t in the scene. He came to the set anyway at nine o’clock at night with his girlfriend who I had never met. And she is … can I say a bad word?

Go for it.
His girlfriend is cool as fuck. And she told me that she asked Keanu what he wanted to do for his birthday and he said, “I want to go see Lance.” He’d never done this before but he wrote me a note thanking me for what I brought to the character in these movies. And he wanted to give the note to me. I’ll never forget it. I’m going to cry now.
