SpaceX has gotten good at landing its boosters, but it did take a while to get it right.

I appreciate the music choice. Too bad it cut out temporarily...

My favorite is the one-- SN10, I think-- where it successfully landed, but was clearly on fire, and they hurriedly declared it a success ended the broadcast before it violently exploded about a minute later.

Speaking of violent explosions - I assume those are fed by leftover fuel?

I assume so, because the only one that didn’t end in fiery explosion was the time it just ran out of gas.

I started wondering just how much junk was out there...

Cumulative worldwide, 1957 to 2022, it looks to be about 14,000 launches.

2022 was a record year for space with 180 successful rocket launches to orbit — the most ever, and 44 more than in 2021. The launches were dominated by rockets from US company SpaceX and from the Chinese government and businesses.

I didn't realize Musk wasn't as deeply involved as the media appears to present. According to Wikipedia, a former SpaceX contractor, Michael Griffen, indicates his funding is minor overall: Griffin later estimated that SpaceX was around 85% funded by the federal government, mostly through his NASA awards, with the remaining 15% funding split between Elon Musk and other private investors.

I also didn't realize the SpaceX rideshare program was fairly inexpensive in the scheme of things.

Now back to the fail video.

The successful landings still look like wizardry to me. Straight up science fiction.

Hence, their relative success.
