Intel co-founder Gordon Moore dead at 94

Intel and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation announced today that company co-founder Gordon Moore has passed away at the age of 94. An era-defining inventor and engineer, his work laid the groundwork for our modern world of computing (and helped create Silicon Valley along the way).

Moore's work in semiconductors and computing had its roots in Fairchild Semiconductor, but he was most famous for co-founding a company called NM Electronics on July 18, 1968. Headquartered in Mountain View, California, the company would soon change its name to Intel.
Moore also lent his name to Moore's law. An observation that's the number of transistors on an integrated circuit would double roughly every two years, it's also become shorthand for the exponential growth of computing technology more broadly, even as the industry has debated its end for years.

I thought he came off quite charming, and prescient, in this brief clip from the (fantastic) doc "Triumph of the Nerds". Come for the remark about keeping knowledgable folks in power, stay for the weird remark about why Intel didn't see "computers in the home" taking off.
That said, imagine having been 94 this week, and being in the top brass of one of the most powerful and influential companies powering everything in sight when you were in your 60s.
Reminds me of my grandmother who lived to 99 and my mom told me that when she asked - via email, no less - what the most incredible technology she ever saw was, just said "being able to turn on a light from a switch on the wall".
Anyway, how many dots are we up to now?

I've been thinking about how in the time between I was born and now things have progressed from transistors were still relatively rare and expensive and the microprocessor was still brand new to transistors being the single most manufactured item ever produced in the entire history of humankind.
As of 2018, that's something on the order of 13×1021 or 13 sextillion transistors, which rather alarmingly exceeds the estimated 100 billion stars in the Milky Way Galaxy.
And it's probably closer to double or more than double that guess right now in Q2 2023, in the range of 20-25 sextillion, largely driven by larger Flash memory, cache memory, SSDs and GPU/Tensor/Scalar processing units. (Go Moore's Law!)
Or if there are about 51 million registered books in the Library of Congress and if we estimate an average book to be about 70,000 words at 5 characters each, that's about 17,850,000,000,000 characters (or 1.785 × 1013), which is still an alarmingly small number compared to the total transistors produced so far.
That's a whole fucking lot of transistors.
Even more amazing is that due to Moore's law the vast majority of them were manufactured in - oh, totally spitballing here - within the last 5 years? Maybe less.
And if Moore's law holds, that means that the maximum length of time in which this super-majority of the sum total of transistors of the total produced over time generally halves itself the same way transistor counts double.
