Do YOU dare to enter the threatening labyrinth of… GEARWORLD?

Come, unwary adventurers, into the strange, wondrous yet terrifying land of GEARWORLD! Documented by the distinguished travel author Eland the Younger, Gearworld is best described as “an access tunnel under reality.” Originally created by MeFi favorite Hugo and Nebula award winner Ursula Vernon (previously) as the draft for a Twine game, Gearworld has taken on a life of its own with multiple interactive fictions, written in Vernon's distinctive style.

She first revisited Gearworld in 2022 as a Choose Your Own Adventure game, hosted through the Twitter polls feature, where readers chose their own path, to glory or to… DOOM? (You can also meet your adorable finch sidekick, James Finchington III, Esq.)

However, most excitingly, a new Gearworld story has just concluded as of March 31, 2023. Behold enigmatic steampunk machines and hives of clockwork bees! Investigate cavernous lakes filled with blood red frogs! Explore corridors where menacing creatures lurk in the dark, waiting to seal your doom! (We also see the return of James Finchington III, Esq, now a chain smoker.) After all, what Ursula Vernon story is complete without a dash of whimsy, a dollop of madness and an undercurrent of pure terror?

Being off Twitter has been good for me overall, but damn, I miss following Ursula. I caught the first story while it was happening Shep shouting about turnips and Ursula's followers being generally delightful made it even more fun.

Someone suggested she move this kind of thing to Tumblr when Twitter closes down polls to the tick-free, and the idea seems to have met with approval.
