Best. Video. Ever. (Well, not really. This is just a tribute.) Gotta love Tenacious D - what other band has merchandise like this?

The version of "Tribute" that they performed on their actual HBO show was better. Especially because Jack was still playing guitar at that point. Instead of...standing. And pointing...at Kyle playing guitar.

not even close, fanboy

Sorry my friend, but that's not even the best Tenacious D video ever. That would be this gem* (3.29MB Flash executable), which is so not safe for work that most people probably shouldn't even watch it at home for fear of its residue still being in their bloodstreams at work the next day.

Ouch. Hardly a fanboy, just aiming for some levity after a particularly heavy day.

Besides, the whole Tenacious D "thing" is how they fancy themslves as the Greatest Band in the World, but really ... they just suck. (But not really.) Or something. I dunno, I just know it's funny.

Anyone with me?

This page has links to lots of Tenacious D's videos. It also has links to Flash/QuickTime/Real/WMP versions of the video to which mr_crash_davis refers. (Helpful for the virus-averse PC user, or Mac users out there, for whom executables aren't an option.)

I'm right there with you, dude. Jack Black annoys the hell out of me, except when he's in his super-pretentious rockstar mode doing talkshows promoting the "band". Then he completely cracks me up.

folk metal all the way, baybee.

the hbo show one is better because they reference 'stairway to heaven' as the greatest song in the world. i guess they didn't do it here because they couldn't get the rights or whatever - but that was the whole point originally - that the d played stairway to heaven for the shiny demon in the middle of the road.

thanks for the link though fafel.

This is the version of Tribute that got me excited and hooked on the D. Seriously can't stand Jack Black anywhere else. High Fidelity, Orange County, Shallow Hal, and something else...s before those just make me want to beat him with a Nerf bat.

VERY funny that this is the FIRST thing I see when logging in this evening since I was JUST listening to that song! (Weirdness)

And Tenacious D also does a great cover of the Corky and the Juice Pigs' song "Only Gay Eskimo"...

I know shag-all about Jack Black, really, but some of the clips on that page are pretty fecking funny. Thanks Fofer - you've brightened an otherwise grey and misty morning here!

Dunno, man, the David Hasselhoff cover of "Hooked On A Feeling" was pretty epoch-making.

I loved Tribute when they did it on Letterman.
As a bonus, Dave Grohl channels the D for this super-pretentious rockstar cover of Stairway (advance to 4:35 in the clip)

Probably totally off topic, since i'm not very familiar with Tenacious D really at all...but I found a link to the video for Royksopp's "Remind Me" (Real format, from MTV2). This video is amazing in my opinion...Mark Hurst, from GoodExperience (the newsletter I found this link on) says, "sort of MTV-meets-information architecture..."

Sorry, back to Tenacious D...

Ugh, sorry, broken link...here's the real link to the video, without the space in the filename. Ugh.

Soundboard from their album.

WAR the D!

That Remind Me video is interesting as it focuses on the interconnections and how the individual is really not individual but part of the whole which is a very Eastern mindset (note it ends the video going to Japan and anime like graphics) kind of an anti-western video. Must be terrorists.

Uhh, alfredogarcia - Stairway is in Tribute during the 'and it saved our butts' section. Did you miss that? No Stairway - denied!

I loved Jack in this.

Jack and Kyle were also quite good in The Cradle Will Rock and I liked Jack in Orange Country and High Fidelity. I like Jack Black as an actor, though I don't think he has always been well used...

Oh, and the D rocks.

Jack Black definitely makes me laugh -- that's why I got so excited about The D when the record first came out. Check out Black's work in Mr. Show. (Another little bit of comedy gold now available on DVD.)

it's done in a different way that's much cooler on the hbo show.
