It looks like an AI made "Wes Anderson's The Matrix"

A little dark but very funny as long as they didn't put all the funny bits in the trailer

Maybe there was some crossover because Greta Gerwig's husband just had a movie featuring a pill that relieves fear of death (However, White Noise was panned...)

Heh. Thought the title of the post was a reference to "Return Of The Living Dead," then I watched the trailer.

Looks like a fairly entertaining movie.

I would like to time-travel to when France Ha was in theaters, sit down beside someone watching it, and at the end, whisper to them "In about 10 years from now, they're going to make a Barbie movie" and then walk out.

(I love Greta Gerwig especially and Noah Baumbach mostly so I just want to be clear I'm all in on this movie.)

This looks amazing and is the weird metatextual girl world movie I've always wanted. I've had conversations with friends about all the epic stories we were telling with our Barbies (someone was always in a dungeon!) and I like that this seems to get that.

The Emperor modeled Alecto's body after a Hollywood Hair Barbie doll, a toy from his childhood, with "long yellow hair," saying:
"I made you look like a Christmas tree fairy...I made you look like a Renaissance angel...I made you Adam and Eve...Galatea. Barbie. Frankenstein's monster with long yellow hair."[8]

I haven't been this interested in a movie release since I don't know when. I'm thinking the Baumbach-factor is fairly obscured by the trailers, but I won't be disappointed if it turns out to be pure fun.

With the Disney-like control Mattel holds over the Barbie franchise, I'd love to hear about the meetings involved in making this happen. Not a few of the suits had to be shitting bricks at one point or another.

When Greta Gerwig was announced to be the writer/director of this, I was like, either she's charmed the suits into letting her make a Greta Gerwig movie with their brand, or she's sold out. Seeing how they're positioning this film, and controlling for the trailers being marketing, it feels like the suits would have to be fully behind this vision for it to get this far.

I for one am looking forward to parents dropping their 6-year-olds off at this and then getting mad that it's not a kids' film

Barbie was alone. Ken was there, but since that puppy chewed his head off, he wasn't really there. She was there - in the mirror - when she put on her make-up. The men at the diner liked it, and she needed the tips. Ken's medical bills were extreme. Choosing her outfit, she felt silly. Astronaut, cowgirl, bikini babe, where was the waitress costume?

She sighed. Girls didn't fantasize about being a waitress in a diner, but this was the real world. Air hostess would do. Ken needed her, so she climbed into the gray bus for another day flirting for tips. The real world sucks.

I mean, I was at a really impressionable age when "Math Class is Tough" Barbie came out. In fact, the breathless local news coverage about the controversy was actually how I first found out some people didn't think girls liked math or that they could be good at it. As a girl who did like math, and fancied myself pretty good at it, I did kind of turn on Barbie at that point. I haven't gotten Barbies for my kids and I feel pretty fine about that decision.

Do I hate Barbie? That's a strong verb to use for my feelings. But I'm certainly approaching any Barbie product, this movie included, with a pretty heaping side of skepticism, and I feel pretty justified in doing so. It looks like fun in the trailers, though!

I didn't grow up with Barbie toys. But as latkes says: there needs to be at least one full-frontal nude scene with both Ken and Barbie. Doesn't need to be sex, but the lack of genitalia in Barbie and Ken dolls is pretty much the second or third thing people think about when they think of Barbie toys. I even remember old jokes from comedians about this issue.

That's been a real trend for the past few years. I've complained about this over on Fanfare plenty of times but there's a real streak of "leave nothing unexplained or ambiguous" in entertainment at the moment, and I feel like this is another symptom of the same. Yeahno. They did not have the weird monogrammed printed-on underwear (granny panties at that) that appeared on Barbies in the 90s, but there was a decided absence of junk. I remember that in the 70s, there was an All in the Family baby doll with a penis -- just a tiny little baby bump, nothing weird -- that led to public unrest at toy stores. I wasn't even there at the time, but it was a lesson in how insanely protective many Americans will be about the minds of their children, as a way to make up for failing to protect them from any actual harm whatsoever.

It's rated PG-13, so you can take an 11 year old, but the theater should not sell them a ticket if they aren't with an adult.

I have no idea what that means anymore. Maybe there's one more curse word or a crude gesture that they could have cut for a PG rating. I don't think this is a sex rating, and I doubt it's a violence rating, so it's probably language.

I am going to share two totally unrelated thoughts:

1. The animated Barbie movies are such a comfort watch for many middle and high school girls* (and boys and enby teens and beyond!) I didn’t understand it till I watched a trailer on Netflix and immediately got it: the Barbies are diverse, all friendly and smart, and they’re solving the word problems… while also being stars and/or influencers AND having a pack of puppies along for the ride. I am an independent, successful adult woman who has two cats and cool friends but my life would definitely be even better if it involved fostering a litter of adorable puppies. (Or would it? No need to think too deeply about housetraining!)

2. I’m not someone who tends to get film star crushes but omg both Margot Robbie AND Simu Liu are the exceptions. I am very, very excited! Ryan Gosling is great, I like him as an actor and distant human, but I’m hoping the other Kens get their own too!

Perhaps, but the basic story in the trailer is so much of a trope it would not surprise me in the least if it all happened in the first twenty minutes and the movie moved on to something more interesting.
posted by Tell Me No Lies at 3:57 PM on May 30, 2023 [1 favorite]

Or who cares if it doesn't? It isn't really the framework of the plot that matters, unless you're looking for an EEAAO or a Shyamalan sort of twist. What matter is how they explore that space within the plot frame. There's a lot that can be drawn out through this Barbie Meets Reality thing, and whatever you think you've seen in this 3 minutes of trailer, there will guaranteed be at least thirty times more content in the movie.

I don't know if parallels with The Lego Movie are necessarily apt, but I could see it. This is aimed at exactly a different audience from The Lego Movie, but if its central message is You Need To Play When You Get The Chance Because Imagination Is Awesome, that's a good message.

It could have a different message and also be equally awesome.

Nobody went to see Romeo + Juliet when it came out for any reason other than to see what they did what that particular plot framework. This will be more creative than that, I assure you, insofar as it won't have a 400 year old script it's based on.

I keep watching the last 17 seconds of the trailer and it keeps being funny. "Can I talk to a doctor?" "You are talking to a doctor."

Thanks for posting, Pachylad!

Or who cares if it doesn't?

I like surprises in movies. Sometimes they're really fun. Sometimes they would have happened in the first few minutes of the movie but I saw them in the trailer and they're not as much fun.

Sometimes they are jokes. Most jokes aren't as funny the second time you hear them, so if I hear them in the trailer, I don't laugh as much when I see them in the movie.

Surprises don't usually make or break a movie, but I still like them.

People complaining about the trailer spoiling the plot of a Barbie film! Get a grip, it'll be weeks before the cinema release and you'll have forgotten about it by then.

I want this trailer to be a feint and for the film to be more like the first trailer, one huge Kubrick send-up.

Weeeeeell… I don’t care about spoilers much, and I don’t care about Barbie much, but some people really do, for both, and the second group is a core demographic for the film, so maybe they deserve some respect? Really, I get super-annoyed at “no spoilers” people, but geeze. Let them have their Dream Houses.

I will say, there is a whole slew of Barbie movies, not live action, which you can find to watch which will have plots that will fucking blow your mind. Barbie has not been a stagnant property across the years, and I watched one "let's talk about the Barbie movies" YouTube video that was an hour and a half long and it was like a rollercoaster.

If you're really a no spoiler person, you note the release date of a film and then go on that day. Anyone watching trailers for a movie is already not a no spoiler person.

Maybe there should be a rating system for how spoilery a trailer will be, but that has to come from the people making and selling the film. I don't think anyone here in this thread has done cool independent research that is providing anything more than we have through the movie marketing materials.

I dunno. I feel like trailers have gone from “enticers” to “explainers” over my lifetime, and I can see why other people find that irritating. A “spoiler rating” for trailers wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Well, I'm in my mid-50s, and trailers have been literally all over the place for most of my life. I can remember trailers for Herbie movies in the seventies that basically were the movie in three minutes, and other trailers that told you so little about what you were actually going to see that either it was a deliberate act of misrepresentation or a brilliant lure glittering in the stream.

I don't think things have changed at all over your lifetime, and I'm sure if you were to do actual viewing of movie trailers across the time you've been alive you'd discover this to be true.

This seems a very uncharitable reading of what I said. You can't "spoil" a good movie, because a good movie is worth watching more than once. But surprises can be fun the first time you see them, no matter what kind of movie it is. So I don't think it's dumb to wish for trailers to preserve more jokes and surprises for the movie.

Indeed. Check out Netflix. There was one where Barbie and Barbie were roommates, and decided to audition for a show... That doesn't do the plot justice. Seriously bananas.

I did not use the word "spoiler" once. A spoiler to me implies a specific plot-point that is integral to the story. In this case, I suppose they could have kept her journey to the real world as a spoiler, or her motivation for going.

I'm just of the opinion that there are more interesting ways to advertise a movie that I think looks really great!
