Happy Pride Month! Long-time MeFite obliquicity suggested I introduce Grace Petrie [Wikipedia], with this article [DIVA], which contained this video, Black Tie [5m, RECOMMENDED - if you only watch one thing here, watch this]. What a treat! By way to introduce her as a person, here is Richard Herring interviewing her for an hour [from late 2019, interview actually starts at 5m12s], and she's really a really funny, charming political spitfire. If you want the politics turned up even more, Music And Politics With Grace Petrie [26m] is from Jan 2023, recorded in Australia, and was just two days before the concert in Sydney where these highlights were audience-recorded [33m]. Additionally, here's a pandemic pro-shot set in an empty Leicester Cathedral [48m] with a mostly different setlist. I think she's wonderful. posted by hippybear (11 comments total) 20 users marked this as a favorite

Black Tie was posted previously as an FPP. I am a cis-het woman, so not really the target audience at all, but that song is so JOYFUL that I often listen to it for a little lift and it just makes me so happy. I love that moment where she says "You'll be loved" and the teenaged-version of herself HEARS her. It reminds me of that moment in the Mister Rogers documentary where the gay cast member hears Mr. Rogers say he loves him just the way he is. Anyway, not trying to change the topic away from Gracie Petrie. I love this video.

Love Grace Petrie. Pretty sure I found her through the previous FPP. Black Tie is fantastic.

Grace is very funny between songs, and she’s touring a stand-up show around the UK later this year.

Grace Petrie is a InterNationale Treasure. She was a protegé of Billy Bragg but is emphatically a person / songster / revolutionary in her own right. Looking forw to the Herring interview.

I don't have anything clever to say, but: two for two here, I like protest music.

So that YouTube interview was from December 2019 and at the end she promotes her upcoming show in 2020 and they completely naively and unironically do a little back-and-forth about "unless the zombie apocalypse." I really like her, but now I'm thinking that by their hubris in laughing at the possibility of the whole world as we know it disappearing suddenly they may have caused the whole past 3 years.

Don't get me wrong her, I forgive her, because she's great, but I really wish she hadn't done that.
