F*ck 7th Grade

Happy Pride Month! wowenthusiast reminded me that Jill Sobule [Wikipedia] kissed a girl way back in 1995 and everybody noticed. It's been too many years since then for this post, but what is she up to today? She's written an off-Broadway play! [Playbill] It was really well-reviewed, enough for multiple extensions in 2022 and even a brief revival earlier this year [Off-off review]. Here she talks to GLAAD about the show and her career [15m, annoying musical bed].

Ideacity hosted Jill for a short set of new songs [16m] off her dare I say excellent 2018 album, Nostalgia Sucks [YT playlist]. Many of these songs are in the theater piece. And here's an interview with The Creative Independent about this album, her process, and her thoughts about her career around its release.

And to close this post, Jill streamed live from Joe's Pub in early 2022 [1h44m, she walks on stage at 9m]], before the theater piece opened.

OK this is weird. My Apple Music shuffle served up "Supermodel" from the Clueless soundtrack just as this appeared in my feed. Sometimes the universe just works.

I've been a long time Jill fan, and saw her live in the 90's, and more recently at some benefits and online shows. Through my work I've gotten to know her personally a little bit, and I'm happy to say she's a lovely person IRL.

I saw F*ck 7th Grade right after it opened, and it was totally charming. Even though the show does delve into her career, you don't have to know much about her to enjoy it. Although it helps if you are aware that Jill released a different "I Kissed A Girl" long before Katy Perry.

She's an amazing activist (which is how I came to meet her), very vocal on abortion rights, LGBTQIA youth issues, and a frequent guest on the Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice Power Hour.

Jill also released one of the first crowd-funded albums, starting the project in 2009, right before Kickstarted launched.

I have no comment on this to speak of, but I just want to say Fuck *8th* Grade, as my "suuuper gay" daughter did terribly, not only because she's Smart Lazy but because she didn't learn a goddamn thing in 6th-7th virtual "school" and thus had none of the math fundamentals to do well in algebra. Also, she got dumped by her cute li'l girlfriend a week before the end of school, on the night of the big dance, by TEXT, because her sociopath of an ex (really, it starts young) made a sock puppet version of my kid and told the now-ex a bunch of lies. Thanks for letting me share that.

I had not heard of her, nor the pre-Katy Perry song. She seems fun! and also weirdly resembles a boss I had in the early aughts.
