Only in Iran, kissing a mid-age actress on an award ceremony could be so politically effective, both actress and the young director are in court now. Hardliners gathered at a mosque and ranted against reformists and western culture. The day after, a high-rank official was arrested because he had let those guys go after the ceremony. What would happen if Oscars was held in Iran?

Maybe some intelligent movies would get an award for a change?

They would, against all odds, somehow manage to suck that much more?

This story does demonstrate the tug-of-war occurring in Iran between moderates, who control the Presidency and the legislative branch, and the hard-liners, who control the judiciary.

While the actress is apparently popular in Iran, perhaps support will continue to grow for the moderates.

I imagine them passing out "Ayatolas" instead of "Oscars", little golden statues of Komeanie himself, and the jury of Mulhas would have judged the movies, they'd smile broadly every time the camera panned to them...well you asked what would happen.

The US isn't treating Iranian filmmakers much better: Abbas Kiarostami was denied a visa to come to New York for the festival premiere of his new film. As the NYT put it: "It's a mystery what the Bush administration thought it was protecting us from when it denied a timely visa to Iran's leading film director, Abbas Kiarostami. Surely not international embarrassment."

The Finnish director Aki Käurismaki promptly cancelled his festival appearance out of protest.
