Well, since I missed out on the first thread, here's my two cents: the findings of the study that indicated, "Jokes mentioning ducks were considered particularly funny."

THAT is funnier than any joke.

I think it makes a difference reading it versus hearing it told. I skip over words (thank you seventh grade Reading Lab) especially when reading online, and imagine the pace and intonation of telling it out loud make a big difference. Repetition of the punchline also helps ("Pancakes, anyone?").
