The scary thing is, that doesn't look like a Photoshop job.

No, but there is some manipulation in the presentation: The sixth and seventh photos are out of order. Unless the driver, after escaping, decided to take another dip in the enormous puddle.

That's what call a "sink-hole" in these parts.

Cheers, Don! I wish I could make a quick list of all the "will the car sink or not?" scenes from the movies, but I can only remember "Psycho"...

Oh that is so sad. Yet hilarious. Sweet, delicious, shadenfrude.

As the driver I would walk away like noting happened. Report the car stolen.

This reminds me of a site I once saw with pictures of a pickup truck embedded in a frozen, snowed-over lake. I've got the pics on my hard drive, but can't find the site anymore. Does anybody know what I'm talking about? That one was pretty good too.

I can't really tell from the splash in the first picture whether this was an accident or a deliberate attempt to ford the puddle/sink-hole. The reason I'm wondering about that is that the answer changes my experience of the images.

There seem to be three possibilities:

[1] the creator of the page set up next to the sink-hole with a camera, knowing that it might look like a puddle to a passing driver, and waited until an accident happened.
or,

[2] they decided to photograph someone silly enough to try to ford what the photographer knew to be a very deep sinkhole.
or,

[3] this person was in the right place at the right time with a digital camera.

Snarfodox: My guess is 3. The photographer was probably just photographing people walking around the sinkhole; that looks like a college or church campus to me.

Plenty more in this vein at Stuck Trucks (of course, the guys in those were deliberately going places they might get stuck).

My impression of the photos is that the driver was trying to get over to the building to pick up someone who didn't want to "wade" through the muddy puddle. I think it was just right place - right time - right equipment (from the photographer's perspective).

I like the attempt to pull the car out.

Mushkelley - it looks like they were making a little progress in pulling the car out until the driver got out by, ho hum, opening the passenger-side door. Then, of course, the car flooded with water and sank. So there's not just the moderate I'm-a-moron-for-driving-into-a-sinkhole, but the more extreme I'm-a-moron-for-flooding-the-car-so-it-couldn't-be-extricated recriminations to deal with.

I'd like to think possibility 3, but my money's on either 1 or 2. The first picture shows the splash of the car hitting the puddle. Why would you have you camera out and take a picture of that unless you knew where this was going?

Who's the U-Boat commander?

No, it's probaby the same person who was driving the tugboat.

Miguel, there was the climax during the final moments of
The Four Seasons, as well as the Phil Silvers/Ron Howard sequence
in It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World...

...But to give credit where it's due, gag shots of that sort have always owed a tip of the hat to Buster Keaton's Birth of a Nation spoof, The General.

You would want to get out before the car sunk too far into the muddy water, or you wouldn't be able to open the car door at all. Once the car started sinking, you wouldn't know how deep the sink hole went.

In what way was this person a moron? Were there signs up that aren't obvious in the photo? Any story behind this?

lucien - please. my hyphenated phrases were intended to convey the apparent state of mind of the driver, not my judgement on said driver. In retrospect, it's obvious that while there was a chance of pulling the car out, a massive influx of water should not have been introduced into it. But I'm not saying that in the same situation I would have been able to think more clearly.

I assumed the people were holding onto the car so she had time to get out, not actually trying to pull it out of the water, hence the reason she opened her door....

Though she looks like she could have fit through the open driver's window just as well too...

Driver buys Suzuki automobile.

Driver discovers inferiority of Suzuki automobile.

Driver attempts to dispose of Suzuki automobile.

Photographer is in right place at right time.

Hilarity ensues!

Good assumption, I guess, but not borne out by pics 6 and 7, where she's already swimming/wading away (7) and standing on dry land looking at the progress (6 - remember, these two are switched chronologically) while the do-gooders are still either trying to pull the car out or removing incriminating bumper stickers.

snarfodox, SpecialK, originalname37: Actually I think it is option 4: the picture is of the driver in a front wheel drive car attempting to reverse out of the sink hole, and the water is being thrown about by the tires.

I think the best part is the bald guy in with the shopping bag in the first 8 pictures. Even with the rather remarkable scene unfolding behind him, he can't be bothered to turn to look at the car, much less put down his bag and lend a hand. Instead, he just grabs occasional glances from over his sholder.

Am I being overly optimistic here, but even in the absence of a winch couldn't a good rope have saved this car a lot of damage? Ah well, it probably only took a couple minutes. As for the photographer, I assume it's just someone who was attracted by the commotion and decided to take pictures instead of (fruitlessly) trying to help.

"my hyphenated phrases were intended to convey the apparent state of mind of the driver"

Soyjoy - thanks. The driver looks plainly shocked to me, but perhaps you are right. I can't really guess at what she was thinking/feeling.

From what I can see, getting out of the car before the car door sealed shut and her vision was obscured by mud was the smart thing to do. I honestly don't think those guys trying to help would have been able to pull the car out and it seems like she did leave it to the veritable last minute before jumping ship. Nice of them to try but.

It could be, but one would expect to see water coming out of the wheel well above the tire if the wheels were spinning enough to throw as much water as we see flying in front if the car in pic 1. Though partially obscured, we can see between the two people, that this is not happening.
