LGBTQ+ media historian/analyst Matt Baume's newest video is How Rickie from My So-Called Life Changed TV Forever [1h]. It made me cry.
It's difficult to describe how much this television show meant to me. And I was older than any of the main characters, but it was speaking to me very deeply. Rickie was just one aspect of this show which seemed to sum up most of my high school and even later experiences through the prism of the characters. But seeing Rickie on television, having come out only a few years earlier in a city with literally zero gay culture... watching this summary really did make me cry. In a good way, I think.

The movie Boys in the Band had this effect on me. Not the inferior remake, but the original.

I just spent the past 4 days attending almost every film at the FM LGBT Film Festival, which featured the movie Bulletproof: A Lesbian's Guide to Surviving the Plot, which is an entertaining but important look at how this representation in media is so important, even though it so often, to an absurd amount, ends in tragedy. Highly recommended.

I rewatched My So-Called Life recently because of its 30th anniversary. Wilson Cruz's performance as Rickie is so touching and heartbreaking and so much of this show -- as this piece illuminates -- was far ahead of its time.
The Christmas episode is an annual rewatch for me.
One of my long-time good friends was part of the campaign to save this show and even helped put together the ill-fated lunchbox boxset. I, of course, sent this to him almost immediately. (Strangely, we didn't meet in the MSCL fandom but another one, but our bond over the show is a strong one.)

I was aware of My So-Called Life when it was on but never saw it. It has been generally on my list of things to try to watch some time, so maybe this will move it up in priority.

That show was my must-watch tv as a teen and its cancellation baffles me to this day.

My MSCL-loving friend watched this and loved it, which I knew he would. I told him he should contact Matt Baume.

I'll do a Fanfare (re)watch if anyone is interested. I am forever happy to talk about this show.
(It's on Hulu.)

The show wasn't popping up on Fanfare so once it's approved, I'll do it. I'll do the first episode and then probably the rest of the series unless there's a huge desire to do an episode-by-episode watch.
