Someone dumped approximately 25 rabbits by Nicasio Reservoir in West Marin. Marin Humane Society rescued them. If you live in the SF Bay Area, and you've been thinking about getting a rabbit, now's the time.

I did a Savannah Bananas post a couple years back. They keep on chugging along now and are even touring, these days. They're so much fun.

I have no idea what this is. It seems to be a fragment from an idea for digital ink [the people listed are in that business] and yet this feels like the front door to an ARG or other kind of mystery.

Winter is coming to many of us in the Northern Hemisphere, and we'll need things to do in the long nights! (For example, I found a pattern for a shirt that I want to make from my stash of Polartec fleece.)

Yngwie Johann Malmsteen Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E Flat Minor with the New Japan Philharmonic is somehow both ridiculous and completely amazing. Perhaps the only combination of rock and orchestral music I have seen that actually works.

John Roberts, of Linda from Bob's Burgers fame, has been making some lovely music videos for his (I think) original music. It's nice dance club music, and some of the videos have stellar production values.

Walking Phnom Penh (from Chris Arnade Walks the World, by a guy who travels around the world, taking walks).

"Phnom Penh is a young city chock full of kids. They are everywhere, and they bring a positive energy, warmth, and joy that no amount of adult diversions — no amount of bars, casinos, exceptional cuisine, and museums — can replicate, because nothing warms the heart like a big smile from a tiny face. I don’t care how silly and maudlin that sounds, because it’s simply true, at an innate and an intellectual level. ...

That idea of having children — as the thing you do...without thinking about because it is clearly towards the good — has been the default mode in most cultures for almost all of our history."

(BTW: nothing says FPPs have to be long, heavily researched, or attract tons of favorites or discussion. I'd say that many, if not most, of the links here would work as-is on the main site. I'm not saying it's bad to post them here, after all I do it too, but FPPs don't need much effort themselves, and a greater variety off FPPs enriches us all!)

I loved that post (and I don't really like baseball). Thanks, DOT. And thanks for sharing it again, here. I just saw they are playing 3 times in Texas next year, so I'll get to see them!

A few months back I made a post about Kinzang Lhamo, the Bhutanese Olympian (and her determination to finish the marathon despite being dead last). A few people in that thread wondered what her reaction to the whole thing was, and this piece in The Bhutanese is the closest thing to that insight I've seen, for those who may be curious:

Behind Kinzang Lhamo’s historic Olympic run

"I started having cramps after 16 km and by the time I reached 30 km I couldn’t keep up the pace. I almost gave up at 40 km when I couldn’t move my legs anymore. However, I saw many international people and Bhutanese living in Paris cheering wholeheartedly for me, which further encouraged me to complete the race. ..."

James Fallows in Wired, yesterday: After the Election, California will keep moving the world forward. Among other topics, includes a discussion of high-speed rail progress; I didn't realize that
this summer, the project received full 'environmental clearance' for the entire 463 miles from downtown LA to downtown San Francisco, with clearance for a further 31 miles from LA to Anaheim expected next year. Nearly all of the thousands of necessary land parcels have been secured.

The new Underworld album, Strawberry Hotel, came out last week. It's full of what the kids would call "bangers".

The second track, "Denver Luna", has been out for a while now, and it's one of my favorite songs of the year.

Underworld's music is, loosely speaking, an idiosyncratic fusion of Karl Hyde's stream-of-consciousness poetry and Rick Smith's techno/house beats. Even if you aren't well-versed in their oeuvre, you might remember their song "Born Slippy (Nuxx)" from the Trainspotting soundtrack.

Maybe you've heard about redlining in the 1930s-40s in the US? Well, it's still a thing. Racial residential segregation is a fundamental cause of racial health disparities. In fact, the US is more segregated today than in the 1990s... Video/podcast and blog post with great links and resources from an academic team affiliated with the American Public Health Association.

one of those weird things i've never forgotten but seems remote from anything i'm actually researching is incense clocks. i also from time to time ponder the existence of geomantic cities. then there's this unique artist (wish his old homepage was still findable) at the exact intersection of conlangs, microtonal music, &, er...small furred animals. good luck with these!

Actors Shortest to Tallest (with a terrible soundtrack, via YT).
I would have guessed all these 5’8” guys were taller:
Mark Wahlberg, Mark Ruffalo, Joaquin Phoenix, Antonio Banderas (5’8.5”)
[EDIT: One of the comments says these numbers are fake]
