The Shogun is bad, I assume

Shōgun Showdown A Roguelite single-line tile turn tactics puzzler with a 16-bit dystopian Japan setting, guide your character through waves of enemies with a simple move set and surprising gameplay depth.

No story, really. Just enough luck in the strategy play to think "I almost had it!" and start again.

That's really clever! I've been re-watching Samurai Champloo a bit and this does a remarkable job of getting the feeling of those lightning quick slash-twist-slash-over fights.

Heads up that there's a demo for this on the Switch, if you want to give it a shot before buying.

The trick is that adding (or removing!) an action to your attack queue is one turn, so if you add three actions to your queue, your enemy gets to take three actions as well—but then unleashing the attack is also only one turn.

It hasn't quite clicked for me yet, but I also haven't had a good night's sleep in a few weeks and I think this is a game that I really need to bring my full attention to. I can see myself getting lost in this on a commute or two.

Note the link is to an early alpha version. It's a finished commercial game now, at least on Steam. On sale right now for $12.

This is a fun one, like a one dimensional Into the Breach. Eventually I ran out of reasons to keep playing, but if checking off unlockables does it for you, there is a bunch of that.

Edit:
There's definitely a joy in positioning that I think is unusual in the genre (maybe also in Fights in Tight Spaces?), so it's worth the money, just recognize that you might not get pulled in ala Balatro or Slay the Spire.

2D Into The Breach was my point of comparison as well! Great fun. After a few runs of the online alpha, my spouse and I have picked up the full thing on Steam. Looking forward to getting stuck in. Thanks for the post!

(Can confirm that the Steam version is much more polished, and seems like a slightly bigger game am round as well!)

(I'm also deep enough in now that I've learned that an upgrade you can buy during a run allows you to add an attack to your queue without it advancing a turn.

I'm still playing the demo. I'm intrigued but I think I need more twitchiness in a game to actually use it to unwind.)
