Woman discovers dog-sitter used her house for OnlyFans content. (slCBC)
This is posted more for "uhhhhh, well huh. I guess that is a thing that you could do whilst dogsitting." But a reminder: sex work IS work, but perhaps do not do said work when dogsitting.

This is a hot topic of conversation this morning -- I heard people discussing it on the bus and someone mentioned it to me at work, as well.
It's a known issue with AirBnB, but I wouldn't have guessed you'd have to watch out for it on Rover.

I don't see any isssue with using AirBnBs for this, after all they want to be treated as hotels, and hotel rooms have long been a staple of many pornographic shoots.

I'm trying to decide how much I would care if this happened in my house. I'm not sure I would really care, as long as whatever happened didn't involve bodily fluids being left behind. Apparently she filmed in one person's bed and I would definitely not be okay with that. But filming in my bathroom? Is that any worse than pooping in my bathroom? Probably not. There's unlikely to be any overlap between the people watching the Only Fans content and the people who would recognize the bathroom tile.

To be clear, I do not believe that Rover was involved in this transaction, I was just making a joke based on a) a popular gig-based app known for having an issue with people using other people's houses for porn and b) a popular gig-based app known for providing dog sitters.

It's a funny distinction in a way but also feels like a pretty clear one: are you paying me to be in my house, or am I paying you to be in my house? Latter feels like much more of a "hey, no implied permissions to do anything in here you weren't contracted for". But I can also see an opportunistic content creator letting those sort of distinctions blur in their mind. Gonna dogsit for you and watch some TV while I'm here. Gonna dogsit for you and work from my laptop while I'm here. Gonna dogsit for you and do a little wetwork on the bathroom floor while I'm here. Catch as catch can in the gig economy, baybee.

This feels like a perfectly reasonable side hustle synergy to me. Get paid to be in a *really nice house*, much nicer than you can afford, and crank out horny content on a regular enough basis for The Algorithm to promote you to enough people that your OnlyFans can fill in the gaps between other jobs.
I'm sitting here taking a break from drawing furry porn; "providing regular horny content" is a big part of my job. If I was doing this while sitting around a rich dogsitter's nice place, that'd be a nice bonus. Double dipping my time!
I mean I can see the "it feels fucking weird to know my dogsitter masturbated in my place" angle but I can also see the "efficiently maximizing the value of my time so I can survive in this capitalist hellscape where machines are ravenously devouring every possible creative profession" angle.

It's totally fine to fire someone for doing things in your house that you don't want them to do, up to and including making porn. It doesn't really matter if there's a legal angle to it - the gig economy is at-will, and PornoPup9000 will no longer be getting dog walking gigs from the "no diddling yourself in my powder room" set. I'm 100% certain that there are people who would be all about it.

Really want more details here. One does not simply "come across" horny content, especially not if you watched it long enough to figure out it was happening in your house. No shame in it, but if you're consuming it it's harder to get mad about the mode of production

I mean there's a pretty bland route: dogsitter has social media presence, dogsitter does OF stuff, dogsitter advertises OF stuff on their non-OF social media presence, dog owner looks at dogsitter's social media. Bad opsec by the OF/dogsitter but doesn't require the dog owner to do anything other than like look at their dogsitter's insta.

OnlyFans providers advertise their OnlyFans content in places which are not OnlyFans.
Algorithms love to recommend related accounts and content, so if you follow your dog walker's dog walking account on Instagram, there's a solid chance that Instagram will suggest you follow your dog walker's OnlyFans account on Instagram also, unless your dog walker is quite good at separating the two halves of their life at all times.

I don't know, but the probability of it happening to any of the people who know what your house looks like are a lot higher. Then you just have to account for the probability of them telling you about it.

Yeah, I know a fair number of people who use Instagram to advertise a porn business along with other businesses. Might be especially common in the arts.
One issue here besides prudeness is that people who recognize your house might think you’re involved in the porn, possibly exploiting the presumably younger and less affluent dog walker. And if you’re philosophically opposed to porn or something specific in the video, you might not want the association any more than you’d want someone filming political YouTube rants at your kitchen table without your knowledge.

For me this comes down to "I'm paying you to watch my dog, not focus on your other side hustle." I know dogsitting isn't the most strenuous of tasks, but "casually watching TV or reading a book while dogsitting" is one thing and "sequestering yourself in another room and devoting your entire attention to something completely else" is another.

She wasn't housesitting, she was dogsitting. Presumably there comes a reasonable time after which the period of dogsitting one is being paid for is over. If the sitter was to leave the house at all other times, that should have been specified and not left to the sitter's discretion. That said, J/Oing in the homeowner's bed is probably something no one should be expected to have to explicitly forbid, though I'm sure she will going forward.

Regarding the algorithm issue, this is absolutely a thing. I have a couple of friends who are sex workers and they have to be really careful that people in their non-sw life don't have any interactions at all with their sw content on social media. No likes, no follows, try not to look at their videos or even search for their content. Trying to silo things as much as possible. And even with all of that, they've still had sw clients find their real accounts through the recommendations, which is obviously a big problem.
Personally I think it fucking sucks that this woman went to the media to out her dog walker without that person's consent. This is the kind of careless act that puts sex workers in very real danger. Ironic from someone complaining about her privacy being violated.

Yikes, that is awful. Rover is one of my side gigs, and I pride myself on being an excellent dog-sitter. The thought of neglecting someone else's pet horrifies me as much as the thought of neglecting my own.
I know people who specifically buy new beds and couches to make sure that no one else has masturbated or fucked there ever.
I mean, if I'm furnishing my home, I prefer to have non-sploogified furniture too. I don't think it's that outrageous... Of course, I also hate buying used clothes because the idea of some stranger's gross body and fluids being on it kinda squicks me out.
My partner is right now cat-sitting for a couple who have multiple security cameras throughout their house, including under their beds (to watch the cats, I guess). I better warn her not to get her freak on...

MacKay said although this is likely not a criminal matter, there may be some civil liability in an instance like this under the tort of "intrusion into seclusion."

I think "invasion of privacy" is an odd thing to be offended about. More like "unauthorized use of my home for your (other) business."
I would absolutely be upset if someone filmed the interior of my home without my knowledge or consent and posted it on the internet, even without specific location data. I would absolutely feel like my privacy had been violated in such an instance.
Regarding only buying new mattresses etc.: having seen how some people treat their mattresses (eg. sleeping on them with no mattress protector, and sometimes not even a sheet), I would be worried about what bodily fluids had soaked down into the mattress if I were buying a used mattress. Perhaps my lower levels of concern heretofore about other cushioned furniture reflects a lack of imagination or experience on my part. But there’s also the potential bedbugs issue.

Gonna dogsit for you and do a little wetwork on the bathroom floor while I'm here.
Whoa, I... I thought "wetwork" was a euphemism for spycraft that included assassination. Not to SWERF the place up or anything but as a homeowner I would be at least somewhat indignant if my dogsitter got up to that.

Anyway, from the article, the homeowner found the advertisement for the dog sitter’s OnlyFans on other social media, and it sounds like there was something from the advertisement itself or other comments on it or something that made it clear that some of the content filmed for the OnlyFans account was filmed in at least one other location where the dog sitter had a dog sitting gig? (Sorry for lack of specifics, I read about this earlier today.) Which then led the homeowner to wonder if their house had also been used in such a manner, and to investigate. But even if they were just like “huh, that’s our dog sitter. Wonder what they do on their OnlyFans” - or were maybe considering OF and that curiosity was the tipping point into subscribing (do you subscribe to OF as a whole, or to specific creators individually?) - even if so, who cares? They could be not-anti-sex work and still upset about the privacy invasion of their home being filmed and distributed on the internet. Or they could have complicated feelings about porn, as seems to be the norm for most people, and thus not be perfectly consistent according to how some other random people on the internet think would be consistent behaviour. That’s normal.

I know this is the internet where anybody can say anything, but this is true: Probably 25 years ago, a friend of my parents was staying at their house while they were gone, and he, a talented amateur (or so we thought) photographer, shot a series of risqué-but-not-porn photos of a nude woman, in their bed -- wrapped up in their sheets -- without asking.
Which we'd have never found out about, except he sold one image to a company that made art postcards, and through sheer circumstance a friend saw it, bought one, and said to my parents, "Hey, isn't this your bedroom?!?"
To make matters worse, there was a painting hanging on the wall behind the subject, and the postcard company absolutely did not get clearance for that, so my parents were angry, the painter was angry, and it turned into a giant brouhaha. My dad is still mad about it and I don't blame him.

(I also don’t think doing a second job while dog sitting is necessarily a bad thing, if it doesn’t negatively impact the dog sitting. So I think the dog sitter in this case made an error in judgement about not using a backdrop to obscure their filming locations when in other people’s private homes, but it also doesn’t seem like the worst thing ever to me, even though I’d certainly be upset if my home were one of the featured filming locations. I view this article more as a useful reminder that not everyone has the same starting assumptions about stuff, so it’s a good idea to have expectation-setting conversations when hiring someone to work in your home if that would also upset you.)

I'm an unabashed smut peddler, and I think that what this woman did was wrong and gross. It's wrong to film any sort of content in a private residence without permission. It's really wrong to film explicit content (which presumably involves some degree of nudity) in somebody's bed without their permission. I hope she at least gave the sheets a good wash afterwards, so the homeowners weren't unknowing sleeping on a bed full of her juices and grit!

I'm with the group (there are dozens of us?) that doesn't find this prudish. In my grad-student days, I definitely wouldn't turn my nose up at cheap used furniture (though I think I never had a used mattress), and I slept from time to time on a grad-school couch that had to have seen some untoward activities in its long life, but I'm certainly glad to be able to afford now to have a bed that no-one else has slept on, let alone partaken on of any sexual activity. (Although it wasn't my motivation per se; I just wanted "new bed," which I perhaps naïvely assumed came with this bonus for free.) I don't think that's especially prudish, but maybe I'm "no, it's the children who are wrong"-ing it.I know people who specifically buy new beds and couches to make sure that no one else has masturbated or fucked there ever.Wait, they told you this? Wouldn't getting "I'm a prude" tattooed on their foreheads be less cringe?

Yes, because I’m not homophobic (actually homophile!) or classist?…
Jk, I would be a little squicked out no matter who was jerking off in my house, but honestly, even as I say that I’m like “why?”. If I had a guest stay over and they jerked off in their bedroom, it wouldn’t bother me at all…. So why is it that hiring someone who then jerks off outside their duties any different? Is it a class/power thing? I dunno…. But there is a difference … but honestly I can think of worse things than a plumber rubbing one out in my kitchen or whatever…. this is literally the stuff of cheesy gay porn!

It is not a homophobic thing or a class thing. Geeze. It is a matter of consent, a breach of trust, completely outside is expected behaviour in this type of business situation, and a violation of privacy by posting videos of the inside of someone’s house.
If I have guests stay overnight at my house that is very different then if I hire someone to do a job at my house. For guests, I am their host, not their employer. I would fully expect consequences if I was caught by my employer using an empty office boardroom to shoot porn in my lunch hour.

When I think about it, the home-versus-office question is partly a question of "how much do I have to see/know about this". If someone were petsitting for me and discreetly took some non-messy photos in my home without photographing anything really recognizable of mine, I would not be nearly as unsettled as if someone were taking those photos in an unused conference room. If they're petsitting, I'm already agreeing that they have a certain amount of run of my home (and I've probably vetted them a bit) and I just have to accept that they might go through my medicine cabinet or look into a drawer, etc. I'm unlikely to walk in on that. If someone is doing something in an unused conference room in a shared space during work, there's much more of a chance that someone will walk in and there's a higher level of pretense between office workers. A petsitter, even a non-nosy one, is going to be aware of much, much more of my personal life than I ever share with people from the office, so for me it would feel less weird than if an otherwise buttoned-up coworker were filming something at work.
For me this is one of those things that American culture has trouble with - it's something that I wouldn't really be thrilled about but it's not something where I'd sue or call the cops, and there isn't a lot of space in our culture between "best thing ever" and "I'm calling 911". It's really just more of an "eh, try not to let me find out next time, ESPECIALLY by making ANY KIND of mess".

If I found out that the plumber I hired had filmed himself jacking off in my kitchen, I guess I might think twice about hiring that guy again, but I can't imagine calling his employer or the newspapers to complain about it. (Assuming I found out well afterwards, not by walking in on him.) What do I even have to complain about, really? I think it's okay for people to film themselves jacking off. I think it's okay for someone working at my house to do non-work activities while they're there (making a phone call, going out to their car to eat a sandwich) as long as they're not charging me for it and it doesn't inconvenience me in any way. If I wasn't home or I was out working in the garden and the plumber decided to sit in my kitchen and watch videos on his phone for half an hour after he fixed the dishwasher, I guess I wouldn't care. The impact to me is the same - zero - if instead of watching videos he's making one for Only Fans. I'd be a lot more upset about him overcharging me or doing a crappy job or lying about the work he did - all things that contractors do every day without anyone writing news articles about it.

I would be chagrined if the narrative by the plumber were, "look at this dumb customer not realizing how transgressive and awesome I am, what a normie". I would be angry and kick them out if they did this while I was home. I would mostly not think about what the plumber might be up to if he were fixing something while I wasn't there. I mean, he might do nothing inappropriately sexual but, like, sneeze all over my counters, which would also be ick.
This reminds me of Nextdoor, really. People are just constantly freaking out because their door cameras show people sitting on their stoop in the middle of the night, or cutting through their backyard, or poking around in their trash - things that aren't crimes except in the very uptight "get off MAH PROPERTY" way. Like, there are people all around us almost all the time, and some small percent of those people are going to do things in our vicinity that are mostly harmless but that we'd rather not think about. The solution here is not to think about it.
Similarly with germs. We are all utterly unclean, so to speak. If you eat in restaurants or shared breakrooms or lie down on a hotel bedspread or take the bus or buy things and don't immediately wipe them down with disinfectant, you are going to be touching things that are invisibly ick, and even if you wash your hands frequently, you're still going to be touching the ick. Now if this just intrinsically bothers you so that you can't relax, sure, fine, take unusual steps to deal with the ick. But if it more or less doesn't worry you unless you think about it, for heaven's sake don't think about it.
Life is full of unsavory but not illegal or harmful happenings; if you spend all your time worrying about whether the dog sitter is taking dirty photos or a teenager is idling on your stoop, you'll have a nervous breakdown.

I don't really care about the porn angle, but if I hired someone to catsit or do other work in my home while I'm away, and they posted photos or videos showing the interior of my home online without my permission, I would be pissed off. Maybe I'm weird in this day and age in having a sense of privacy about my living space, but for me that is a serious violation of trust. Even for friends and family I've invited over, I prefer at least the implied consent of letting me see them take the photos so I can speak up if there's something I'd rather not have photographed. But in hiring someone to come into my home, a basic level of respect for my privacy should be implicit in the job description.

Eh, this is mostly just prudishness and anti sex work bias. If someone is staying in your home, you have to assume they're having sex or masturbating in the bed / shower, and you'd just wash the sheets when you get home anyway. Who really cares if they film it? (I'd be a bit more mad if they were doing stuff on surfaces you could reasonably expect NOT to have a stranger's butt on, like the kitchen counter, but I'm a bit of a germaphobe)
Short films (non-adult) get made in AirBnBs ALL THE TIME, and most of the time the homeowners aren't told about it in advance. Would the homeowner be mad if it was some film school project where there was a heist and characters got shot and killed in her bed? Probably not, even though violent short films are arguably morally worse than consensual sexy short films.
Also... I really don't quite believe that "the homeowner saw an ad on Facebook for the onlyfans creator", like what? That sounds very implausible. I go on Facebook every day and I've never once seen an ad for OnlyFans (!!!), let alone randomly just happening to see one of the very few pieces of OF content in the whole entire world that just happened to befilmed in her home (!) Kinda made me wonder if the homeowner has a partner who actually knew what was happening, followed that creator, and the woman making the complaint found the OF in hubby's browser history.

Uh, a dog sitter is there to care for the dogs,. They're not a paying guest, they're an employee. And the issue wasn't that they were jerking it in the bathroom, the issue was that they were filming it and putting it on the internet. If I hired someone to put groceries in my fridge while I wasn't home and then they filmed a bukkake session in my living room, that would not be OK!

My partner and I got drunk and discussed this at length last night.
We came to the agreement that 1.) if we caught our petsitter doing OF shoots in our apartment we would find it extremely funny 2.) While we may not hire them again, we would certainly not pursue any kind of legal action about it, and the very LAST thing we would do is go on the news. Because what the hell, Amanda?
The degree of the transgression, we agreed, depends on whether this took place in a location that is easily cleaned (in this case, yes) and whether there was an expectation that this sitter was staying in our place, which is to say we put out sheets for them and had the general expectation they would be living their life there, showering, eating, etc. (in this case, no.)
Which I guess makes this instance medium uncool? But still very funny.

Also disturbing: that there are multiple people on Metafilter - where we’ve had various posts taking about social media algorithms - who think that since they’ve never seen an ad for certain content on Facebook, that means that no one else could plausibly have either, regardless of differences in friend groups and how their or their friends’ social media behaviour might impact the extremely highly individualized algorithmic feeds that all social media sites present us nowadays.

Side note, because people apparently don’t read the links: TFA was a day-dog-sit situation, not an overnight situation or dog+house-sitting situation.

This story makes me think of this Seinfeld clip yt .
Or the other one where George's mom accuses him of 'treating his body like an amusement park'.

So am I to understand that some of you are getting ads for OnlyFans on your regular social media feeds? I mean, I'm not, but then, I'm not the target audience and I don't tend to follow a lot of That Sort of Thing without using an InPrivate browser or something (IOW, no judgement here). I asked the Schmoop, who is much more the targeted demographic for such things, and he's never seen an OnlyFans ad on socmed either (and knows he could tell me if he's seen/used them).
Is it just Instagram (which neither of us have) that would be showing it?
The article specifically said the homeowner saw the OF ad that showed the unique tile that made her investigate further, so I don't know why some of you have it entirely backwards:
"A few weeks ago, Joudrey LeBlanc came across a video of the dog-sitter on social media advertising an account on OnlyFans, a subscription website mainly used for pornographic content.
She realized immediately it was recorded in her house, because her bathroom is covered in a distinctly patterned tile. Joudrey LeBlanc then paid $7.99 for a month's subscription to the dog-sitter's page, where she discovered the explicit content. "

My guess is that she didn't see a paid advertisement, but rather a piece of content the dogwalker/OF star had created and posted on (probably) Instagram to promote her OF account. Those sorts of 'model' accounts are all over Insta and a lot of those models also have other accounts that aren't related to their sex work. But unless you are super careful at how you manage the relationship between accounts and how you manage accessing those accounts to keep Meta from linking them, content will leak across that line. Someone who follows your cute dog photos account may end up being suggested a Reel from your sex work account because Meta knows those accounts are related based on past activity between the two and sort of assumes if you like one, you might like the other.

I too am a (former) porn slinger, and I'd be annoyed if my dog sitter was doing porn and sharing the interiors of my home without my permission. I don't want the positions of my entry points and the state of my yard out there in the wild, as well as neat capsule of how profitable a break and entry would be. Especially if there's anything to tie the dog sitting angle to my house being you know, empty for long enough to need a dog sitter.
That's before you get to how long it takes to set up and film a take, which is time in which my dog is in a crate and not being you know, dog sat.
I probably wouldn't go to the media about it, mind you. I'd just not hire that dog sitter again and maybe go hey, it's really rude to post extensive video of other people's houses on the Internet without their consent, maybe ask next time or just not fukken do it.
