Ring the fuller minstrel in

In Memoriam A. H. H. OBIIT MDCCCXXXIII: 106
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light:
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.
Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.
Ring out the grief that saps the mind
For those that here we see no more;
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.
Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.
Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
The faithless coldness of the times;
Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes
But ring the fuller minstrel in.
Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.
Ring out old shapes of foul disease;
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.
Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier hand;
Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be.
(Alfred, Lord Tennyson)

Now winter nights enlarge
The number of their hours;
And clouds their storms discharge
Upon the airy towers.
Let now the chimneys blaze
And cups o’erflow with wine,
Let well-turned words amaze
With harmony divine.
Now yellow waxen lights
Shall wait on honey love
While youthful revels, masques, and courtly sights
Sleep’s leaden spells remove.
This time doth well dispense
With lovers’ long discourse;
Much speech hath some defense,
Though beauty no remorse.
All do not all things well;
Some measures comely tread,
Some knotted riddles tell,
Some poems smoothly read.
The summer hath his joys,
And winter his delights;
Though love and all his pleasures are but toys,
They shorten tedious nights.

Memories accumulate and pass
like wings of birds
tracing auguries of strange fates
and stranger moments
Poignant tears never shed
for small blessings
and gentle reminders
Connections made and those gone by
Inconsequential flutters like
Weeknight sunsets
Or kisses of angels
in the wind
-myself

My first reaction: Dorothy Parker knew the Jaws guy??!
That was completely wrong, of course, that’s Peter Benchley. On googling though, he is Robert Benchley’s grandson, curiously enough.

Ring Out, Wild Winds of Twenty-Twenty-Four
Ring out the thunder of distant strife,
The cries that pierce the fragile life;
Ring in the quiet, the cease of pain,
The healing dew of gentle rain.
Ring out the iron that scars the land,
The fist that tightens its cruel command;
Ring in the voices, brave and free,
The will to bend, the vow to see.
Ring out disputes of ancient claim,
The bitter feuds, the endless blame;
Ring in the peace that none can feign,
The grace to break oppression’s chain.
Ring out the tempests of blood and fire,
The grinding wheel of old desire;
Ring in the dawn of a kinder hue,
A fragile hope, a world made new.
Ring out the shadows where fear holds sway,
The silenced tongues, the dreams betrayed;
Ring in the bonds no chains can sever,
The heart that beats for peace forever.
Ring out the year with all its tears,
Its bitter ghosts, its fractured years;
Ring in the light we hold in store,
And may it shine forevermore.
