After a very positive reception at the Cannes Directors' Fortnight, Carson Lund's directorial debut Eephus is opening this week to very good reviews, touted as "the best baseball movie since ‘Moneyball’".

"Two recreational baseball teams, the River Dogs and Adler’s Paint, have been meeting on their New England field on Sunday afternoons for longer than anyone can remember. The baseball diamond is soon to be razed to make way for a school, and the teams meet for one final game at their beloved Soldier’s Field. As day turns to night and innings bleed together, the players face the uncertainty of a new era."

(Yes, that really is Bill 'Spaceman' Lee making a cameo, and yes, that really is documentarian Frederick Wiseman doing voice over)

The fact that Spaceman is in this and they're using the weirdest damn pitch as a metaphor is perfect.

Also love that line: "kind of like baseball, I'm looking around for something to happen, and poof! Game's over."

my partner has fond memories of watching Expos games with their dad back when Bill Lee was pitching for Montreal

what is the immortal epithet? "like a drunk falling off a barstool" is how he pitched

FWIW Ted Williams homering off of Rip Sewell's in the 1946 Allstar Game is probably the most famous eephus pitch in history. Williams had to take a step or two towards the mound - out of the batter's box, judging from the footage - to develop enough power to hit it over the fence. posted by flug at 1:27 AM on March 12

I love this trailer, but sadly it doesn't seem to be coming to the town I'm in. Pitiable.

FWIW, I saw on reddit that it will be streaming on Apple TV.
