The Mastodonte Project

The Mastodonte Project is a way of inserting comments into the referrer logs of the company who are inserting adverts into blogger's referrers... they were not expecting Mastodonte to publish the results!

No, it's not MetaFilter unless someone gets called a fuckwit.

on my site i'm detecting 'mastodonte' in the user agent field and redirecting to goatse.cx.

Oh, there's plenty of fuckwits now. And a few "Hi, MetaFilter!"s as well. Most of the inserts are pretty predictable, but somehow I really like -

I've got the following sites in my logs who appear to be offering the same sort of thing: sucessmath.com, americatopdown.com, thecitylofts.com and datashaping.com.

They are publishing the comments as they come in... this is a cool and unexpected development... :)

Damn, no I can't. The text got clipped. The idea was to link from here to a comment on the referer page that would link back to this comment on Metafilter.

Sad I know :o)

Err, be careful. You can break it like i did. It clipped my comment and I had an open < which meant that nothing else appeared. Had to send a > to close the tag and allow other comments to appear.

Well this was also on slashdot, so some of the responses are slashdotesque.

after we've all finished being silly about it, we can get them to remove our domains/blogs from their target list...

Opt-out? Send us your URL: opt-out@mastodonte.com
We think it's our customer's best interests to keep our database clean of blogs that prefer not to receive our ads.

also would a redirect in an .htaccess file do the same thing as Mo and Marcia's asp and php scripts...? like this:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} http://mastodonte.com/
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.losers.org/

I'm not sure if I want to opt-out or not, they haven't hit my url yet and I'm afraid it's a trap :P

Tracy, the referer field would not contain 'mastodonte.com' - it would contain the url of whichever site they are trying to advertise in our logs.

Does anyone realize the referral spam company is loving every minute of this? All publicity is good publicity, why else would the company knowingly publish their referral stats?

answer: because it got them plastered on slashdot, metafilter, and a thousand other blogs. You can't buy publicity like that.

dg, it's not MeFi until someone says:

I, for one, welcome our new Mastodante overlords!

And i do!
