So here's hoping we can start planning that Lisbon MetaFilter gathering...

Oh good. More football. Just what we need... ;o)

I like how there are so many teams that aren't major world powers...you've got a San Marino team, Azerbaijan, Wales, etc...it's pretty neat.

With that said, I think that's part of the reason football can't ever seem to take off in America. It's just not a unifying force....that, or we're too "sportsed-out".

Speaking of which, I wonder how many MetaFilterians know the capitals of all the European countries in the second link - Moldova's, for instance... [Answers here]

Unless I miscalculated, there's a chance that Portugal could host Slovenia in the opening match in Porto. If that happens, let me just say that, Miguel, we want your heart, we want to eat your children.

Isn't someone supposed to dispute whether Miguel is actually portuguese?

Personally I can't wait for Euro2004... cos then it will be over sooner. Football... damned stupid game. Give me Rugby any day of the week... ;)

Well, thanks for ruining the capital of Slovenia question, Ljubljana - next time be kind enough to hide your handle, will you? [Don't worry, we shall be gentle.]

At least there's nowhere for Portugal to go but up.

I know the capital of Moldova, but only because I read this book.

I'd have more interest in Euro 2004 if I thought England were going to be there..

Ah, what am I saying? I'll probably watch every single match that I can, like I do every time. :-)

I'm making reservations now for the Cardoso Bed & Breakfast - I hear it's nice & they provide smoking jackets!

Well, I intend to be there if England qualify. Never been to Portugal. I hope they speak English or I'm gonna have to do a lot of shouting and pointing (on top of the drinking and fighting of course). ;-)

But salmacis - why didn't England host the thing? That way they'd have qualified for free! You'd be surprised how reassuring it is to know one's team is in already. And, not only that, playing within walking distance. ;)

*ducks, taking madamjuju's reservation and denouncing squealy to the immigration authorities as a certain troublemaker*

Well, we'd have loved to host it. Strangely, UEFA felt that someone else ought to have a go after we had it in 96...

You'll enjoy it. We had a blast 7 years ago.

Sarge: you're allies; you don't count. Some of the barmy yarmy are still hangin' around from the last time, keeping the spirit of Caledonia alive.

I just wish the English bastards were as well behaved. Perhaps you could have a word with them? They'd listen to you. ;)

I like soccer, but one argument in favor of American football is that I'd rather look at this than this.

Sarge, I hope your an Anfield man and not, as I'm thinking, a Celtic supporter. 'Cause Owen is going net tomorrow in a big way. yah!

Combining a trip to euro 2004 with the marriage ceremony to Missjuju is a good idea methinks, we're right around the corner from that cathedral she likes.
Celtic supporter bill mate!
