Me neither. Why would you have a picture of freedom fries with the caption "You Want Freedom With That?". Wouldn't a picture of a burger and milkshake make more sense? The good captain got it right the first time he made the joke, but there was no picture involved.

Is this the MeFi version of a Fark photoshop thread? One person posts an image with some text under it, demonstrating a lack of skill or humor, then dozens flock to decry it?

I'd like to see some attempts by MeFi-ers to produce quality pictorial humor on this topic.

Turning and turning
Within the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer
Things fall apart
The center cannot hold
And a blood dimmed tide
Is loosed upon the world

Nothing is sacred
The ceremony sinks
Innocence is drowned
In anarchy
The best lack conviction
Given some time to think
And the worst are full of passion
Without mercy

Surely some revelation is at hand
Surely it's the second coming
And wrath has finally taken form
For what is this rough beast
Its hour come at last
Slouching towards Bethlehem to be born
Slouching towards Bethlehem to be born

Hoping and hoping
As if by my weak faith
The spirit of this world
Would heal and rise
Vast are the shadows
That straddle and strafe
And struggle in the darkness
Troubling my eyes

Shaped like a lion
It has the head of a man
With a gaze as blank
And pitiless as the sun
And it's moving its slow thighs
Across the desert sands
Through dark indignant
Reeling falcons

Surely some revelation is at hand
Surely it's the second coming
And the wrath has finally taken form
For what is this rough beast
Its hour come at last
Slouching towards Bethlehem to be born
Slouching towards Bethlehem to be born

Raging and raging
It rises from the deep
Opening its eyes
After twenty centuries
Vexed to a nightmare
Out of a stormy sleep
By a rocking cradle
By the Sea of Galilee

Surely some revelation is at hand
Surely it's the second coming
And the wrath has finally taken form
For what is this rough beast
Its hour come at last
Slouching towards Bethlehem to be born
Slouching towards Bethlehem to be born

hrmmm... i wonder how long it will take for people to realize that the french fry is truly an american invention and the name stems not from any nationality but from the technique used to make those delicious starchy treats. what some might nowadays call a julienne was once (in our much less PC days) called 'frenching'. all it means is to take something and make little strips out of it. really, with the way home cooking has become so en vouge these days you'd think emeril or some other suitably bland tv chef 'personality' would have come raging to the defense of our poor little spuds. well at least we still have fren^H^H^H^H er, freedom toast.

Three cheers for Captain Ligntning for being such a good sport, especially as I thought the image he linked was a good post - and a great companion-piece to the previous discussion - well worth debating, along the lines of popular semiotics and iconography. I thought it was telling and signalled a strange, new defensive America. Pity. But yay for the way he went with the flow and joined in the fun (after putting up a good fight!). Let it be an example to us all. Well, at least to me. I'm definitely contributing a dollar to help put the H back in his name. :)

"My oh my," he said to himself, rubbing his hands together in expectation and literally salivating, "it's time for an unexpected extra late-night helping of typically scintillating MetaFilter conversation: intelligent and erudite, with a dash of elitism and a smidgen of genteel flaming to give it that extra kick! Now that I have made myself a cup of Earl Grey tea, I shall enjoy a thread the likes of which I haven't seen since the Laurie Garrett fiasco!"
