So, um, fire and water are copyrighted now, like music? "Buy the sky and sell the sky". . .

For those of you who aren't registered at the New York Times, here's a direct link to the article.

I really have no other comment, except to agree that this is ridiculous . . . .

"Despite Evans' suggestion the South Kingstown fire display be moved off the river, the local group went ahead with a June festival after consulting a lawyer."

This is the saddest part. It's not that surprising that there are people laying claim to all that exists and trying to make a buck off it. But when people start taking them seriously and wasting good money for a legal opinion on a question that anyone could answer for themselves, well, that's a bit much. Let's see, does someone own the idea of mixing fire and water? Um, nope, not on this planet. Next.

Hey, it's Rhode Island, remember... There's not a whole helluva lot to do there; at least they're keeping busy...

Webmutant, how did you know to just add that www10.nytimes addition to that link to make it go directly to that article?

I rather enjoyed WaterFire when I lived in Providence, although there's only so often one can visit it before it gets tedious. (The gondolier is a great touch, though.) If the artist's concern -- and I think this may be the case -- is simply that people are using terms that cause confusion with his copyrighted art piece, it's much more understandable. (Although, like most such confusion cases, it's still of stupid and pointless.)

I'm a webmutant. I just know these things. :)

No, seriously, though, it's a little trick I learned right here on Metafilter, actually.
