someone down under goes over budget

What does AUS$4 Million get you? A website. Not a very good one at that, but what do you expect when it's only 3.6mil over budget?
tiamat, your comment history is fascinating. I don't know how this community survived so long without you.

Damn. Think I'll get into web design!
Seriously though, I'll probably forget about this by tomorrow, so I hope there'll be a follow-up when these folks offer up a comment on where all that money went.

Crikey, that's awful.
But it's funny as hell, for me at least, reminding me as it does of my days in the IT game in Sydney. Vignette was the one-tool-for-all-seasons solution pushed by the Internet Dev division of the company I worked for, too. I abandoned the shares I was given when I came to Korea, the ones that weren't bought back - not worth the effort to sell them. And spending 4 mil on a 400k project was par for the course.
Good times, good times.

Hmm .. let's see. Ugly navigation bar with annoying color code -check. Cheap stock photo backgrounds -check. Inconsistent design -check. Ugly URLs -check. No forum and no news other than press releases -check. Part of site only works in IE (search box not visible in Mozilla) -check.
Yup, looks like a typical government website to me. Oh, and it's slow, too.

Going completely offtopic here because I have nothing to say about this other than random mumblings about government excess and stupidity (I mean, what else IS there to say?) - wanted to notice tiamat.
So, 45 posts in which he commented, once, to each thread he posted in - 'damn hippies' and nothing else?
Jesus. That's beautiful! Genius and creepy, really. I mean, sure, spamming, angry rants, always posting it, etc. But just taking the time to post 'damn hippies', once, to 45 threads . . .
Wow. It's literally like a whole performance art. I am in love.

Two words convey all that need be said on 45 completely different topics. Brilliant.
"Damn hippies", indeed.

Damn hippes. Sometimes, the hippies aren't at fault. A hippes in this case is awfully close to hippos...a big animal...like the site. Hippos are neat, the site is not. Hippes, indeed.

I did and I didn't get squat. Could you say more? I'm interested in credible Vignette stories.

That trackback sounds like "My sweet lord" but I can't get the syllables to match the notes. Anyone?

That site totally rocks (in a mullet sort of way). I'd like to build a totally fucked up site sometime like that. It would be all those things that you shouldn't do, rolled into one giant fuck you.

Looks like tiamat has been a contributing member for about 17 more months than you, Pretty_Generic. :)
I think the "damn hippies" comments are genius as well.

Maybe it's not useful, but I'm glad P_G pointed out tiamat's unique posting style.
'Damn hippies' isn't offensive enough to really upset anyone, it's not really a running joke (no one seems to have cared or even noticed until now), AND taimat posts regular posts as well. Wee-eird.
It's like some weird tourette's tic or something. The fact that tiamat persists with this oddness in the face of everyone's total indifference fills me with a kind of wary respect.
Back on topic, the minister for the DCITA is Richard Alston, apparently photographed here a few seconds after being beamed aboard the Starship Enterprise. Regular readers of The Register will recognize the minister as the subject of much ridicule here, here, here and oh.... here
