Apocalyptic imagery

Apocalyptic image gallery A scholarly site with a large collection of images illustrating the Revelation of St. John, with emphasis on medieval painting, carving, and sculpture. Felix Just, S. J. has compiled a more diverse collection that includes an extensive set of contemporary images. As a lover of all things nineteenth-century, I'm rather partial to Francis Danby (I just saw The Deluge at the Tate) and John Martin.

As computer screenshots go, here's something I felt was nearly an apocalyptic image: a webcam portal peppered with "give blood to the red cross" images people had put up in place of their headshots. This was taken on 9/11/2001.

The Albrecht Durer woodcuts and Patrick Farley's Apocamon are particularly good.

Who needs scholarly when you've got Revelations Illustrated?

That "Revelations Illustrated" link is awesome. Reminds me of the cover art for an Yngwie Malmsteen heavy metal album.

thomas j wise, you find some fabulous links. This is more wonderful stuff - I am still enjoying the St. Sebastian and illuminated manuscripts. Please feel free to grace us with your posts more often!

Hear, hear! Or is it here, here? Either way, TJ Wise, your posts are only eclipsed by your username in terms of coolness, I encourage you to post more often!!
