Interview by Peggy Noonan.
posted by johnnydark at 2:22 PM on September 16, 2003

I was a volunteer firefighter for years. That involved a lot of very unpleasant situations, the worst of which was pulling a 17 year old boy out of his pickup truck. He was hit head-on at about 70mph by a drunk driver. The force of the impact didn't quite kill him, but the resulting fire certainly did.

There were many, many inappropriate things said while extricating his body. Sometimes humor keeps you "on the job" when you want to break down and cry. I don't begrudge anyone that.

Self link.
And the bottom line of course, as always, is that discussion of politics on MetaFilter blows goats and I would sooner ban it entirely than stomach another Bush baaaaad! thread.

While I like beating up on Bush as much as or more than the next guy, I'm not a big fan of the idea that we all had to be weeping balls of train wreckage every minute of September 11th. I know my first thought on hearing about the attack was something to the effect of, "Wow, somebody threw a grade-A monkey wrench!" I still had all of the usual nightmares in the days that followed, but uniform hysterical grief is, I think, pretty close to insanity. I'm pretty sure I'm not a horrible person for having one ultra-cynical thought. And while I think Bush is a horrible person, this isn't a very good proof.

For no apparent reason, I'm participating even though this thread is slated for imminent death.

But, dude, seriously. I said things a lot blacker than that on September 11th. Of course, I was there, unlike Bush. And Michael Moore's so wrong to lead with that when he has two perfectly good complaints about Bush. Sure Bush comes off as a dolt, but still, no one should be forced to give up their right to laugh in the face of horrible events.

they'll just say Noonan's a liberal. like, she was a liberal mole in the Reagan/Bush I White House

damn liberal media

ps timeistight, if Matt doesn't like the thread, he'll kill it. otherwise, you'll have to endure the presence of Bush posts on the front page, just ignore them if you don't like them. also, your ipse dixit thing is a little tired by now

Err... so what? He relayed an amusing anecdote which was at least somewhat amusing. It wasn't even gallows humour. I despise Bush's politics but I don't see why people drudge up the most lame complaints about him.
posted by substrate at 2:50 PM on September 16, 2003

Friends, this is so low on the list of reasons not to like Mr. Bush it doesn't even bear mentioning.

And self links are mostly evil.
posted by Outlawyr at 2:50 PM on September 16, 2003

Actually, if that happened, it happened; funny things happen in times of stress, too. What is telling, however, is that Bush chose to relate the story that way, evidently not realizing how it would sound to some, or that his happy little anecdote about "What I Did on September 11, 2001" might not be the most tactful, given what so many other people were going through that night.

If it's any help, johnnydark's user page relates a charming story of drunkenness, gang rape and bloody retribution.

I knew I had to get even with these fuckers, but I didn't know what to do. I decided I would go to one of their party's and vandalize their house. Hopefully they wouldn't remember me and I could get away with straight fucking their shit up. I knocked on the door to the frat house. The guy who opened the door was one of the guys who raped my girlfriend. He recognized me immediately. Before any of us could say anything, I pulled out a pen and stabbed him four times in the neck. I was in shock. I had never seen so much blood in my life. He just kinda grabbed his neck and fell to the floor. He just looked up at me, rolled his eyes back and died. He just laid there. No one did a fucking thing. I closed the door and ran. I had my car there but I just kept running. Once again I made the two mile trek, this time the blood on my hands wasn't mine. Fuck frat boys.

My name as you know it is Gabriel. I do the Lord's work. Occasionally the work has its rewards -- and Mary was one such...
...
She was young, no more than 16, and she knew me for who I was the instant my feet touched down on base earth and I permitted myself to be seen...
...
"You know the service required of you, Mary."
...
The impulse could no longer be put off. I held myself tightly against her and came, spilling the God-seed into her, feeling her muscles tense against me as it found what it needed deep within her.
...
I left her, crying and shaking and clutching for something to cover her, as my wings beat back the daylight, the smoke dissipated, and I took flight.

If you scroll down a bit more, you'll find:

Her hair twisted against the mattress as she tossed her head, still struggling, still acting as though she were unwilling despite having made her choice. I counterpointed every note of struggle with a drumbeat of hips against thighs; every whimper and protest was met with a fierce lash of flesh against flesh. I made it last longer than I had to, because I could. I took more from her than I needed, because I wanted to. I fucked her for pleasure because I am the Power of the Lord God and I have earned my few rewards.

Johnny, you ok man?

Why is the same morbid story from JohnnyDark's userpage reprinted here by jcterminal??

Deleting this post won't be enough. We need to delete the user. Then find his parents, delete him. Whatever god-awful state he hails from-- delete that too. Don't stop there. We need to delete MetaFilter, because it's posted here. Fuck's sake, we need to shut down the ISP that gives it a connection. We need to burn the phone lines, smash the hardware, and enact a curfew.

QUICK! MATTHOWIE!

It's just an aside. Nothing to do with the real character of DubYa.

Should johnnydark want to mention what he's doing regarding dismantling the Patriot Act, his letters of disappointment in the Senate to his Senator, then I'd be interested.

The topic: apropos nothing, really.

Well I hate Bush's politics. .I think he is fucking this country over in ways that Reagan and his people (although some of the same people are still around) did not think of. . .AND I concede his humanity and found nothing inappropriate about anything that was related.

And the thought of Laura rubbing those fuzzy slippers up my naked flanks. . .. . .naw. . .won't go there. . .

encountering laura bush, fuzzy slippers and the word naked referenced in the same sentence is remarkably destabilizing.

This is so supremely disturbing in so many ways....Of course, a rape victim who COMES because she really wants it, in the end. Un-fricking-believable. When did they let you out of prison, johnnydark?

I agree, delete this thread, delete the user, delete the whole damn thing.

Bush's position as my second favorite President continues. It's good to see the guy has a sense of humor and, in some ways, deals with the little details of life much like we all do.

Anyone who gets pissy over that interview (which I doubt is real) is as dumb as those people who claimed art/music/life/books would never be the same again after September 11th. Life marches on.

Now, if he was laughing diabolical when the planes hit tower 1, tower 2, the pentagon or plowed a field, then yes it would be damning.

Humor in the face of death is a coping mech.
