BBC Babes

Oh Why Oh Why Does The Beeb Have All The Best Babes? Oh all right, I confess that sometimes it's not only the news I watch the BBC for. I admit I pay more attention to the Middle East crisis when it's reported in loco by Kate Adie or presented by Anita Macnaught! As for Keshini Navaratnam, I have the sick delusion she reads the news only for me... Yes, you can drag me away now, thank you. (Parting remark, heard before the ambulance doors shut: "When will you Yanks ever offer such intelligent crumpet to the world, huh?")

Ouch! That front page! If I wasn't schizophrenic before, I am now.

I always thought it was silly to get a crush on the newreader until I met Mishal. In other news, Anita McNaught featured [briefly] in a music video - "I love the lady newsreader more than the reviews".

Oh Why Oh Why Does The Beeb Have All The Best Babes?

Un-huh.

I'm just guessing here, migs, but they don't have Telemundo in Portugal do they?

That channels the best. It could be a documntary about cancer among Pakistani war widows and there's still be some buxom babe spilling out her dress reading the story. I love cable.

I've found the only real redeeming factor of twenty-four hour news channels: Wendy Petrie (link goes to some stalker's ramblings, about the only thing on the net that mentions her) I think it's the fact that she's a Kiwi doing the Canadian news, making it seem so much more refined and international. Keeping in mind that any british-y type accent all strikes the same 'Now here's the important news' chord in the subconscious.

Her bio said she worked as a reporter for a few years back in New Zealand, so I hold out hope that she's not just hired eye-candy and that sophisticated voice isn't just a cruel ruse.

Miguel, how can you fail to appreciate the wondrous Mishal Husain, capable of demolishing prevaricating foreign ministers with a single raised eyebrow?
posted by languagehat at 6:42 PM on September 17, 2003

would it be somehow judgmental of me to venture the following guess? britain seems to have people from all the world over (effect of colonizing everyone or whatever) in one place, everyone mixing, like it or not. and variety being the spice of life and all...

my rambling point being -- when you have that many people from that many different places, chances of a beauty or seven tend to be higher (also, mixing. i LOVE mutts/mixedkids/whathaveyou -- ALWAYS beautiful). the US (where i live) does have "diversity" but the average viewer seems to shun variety in their news anchors (or at least that's what the networks think).

also, i have to add: Gurvir Dhindsa is a hottie. dc indians representing, i suppose (my mom calls to report her every cool move).

time for me to put down that beer.

I'm with languagehat. Mishal's where it's at for newsbabe. In the specialty category, however, one mustn't discount the suspiciously consistent hotness of TechTV babedom. Sumi!

Yeah, I was about to mention Mishal Husain, anchor of the 30-minute nightly BBC News World.

Kelly O'Donnell of MSNBC was enough incentive for me to stay glued to the set through Central Command's tedious briefings from Qatar during the Iraq war. (Her bio doesn't show up on MSNBC's list of "faces", though -- have they canned her? Hope not.)

Kate Adie is hot, delmoi. Her courage, her voice, her aplomb are deeply sexy. And she has lovely hair.

Yes, I feel awful for forgetting Mishal Husain - I just hope she doesn't read MetaFilter.

quonsar - how many times does Matt have to tell you that posting inline images can lead to bad things and other things beginning with B, like being banned and growing bald? ;)

zonker, Norah O'Donnell (your Kelly) shows up all the time on Hardball, if you can stand Chris Matthews. MSNBC has some good-looking female anchors and reporters, if you're into that sort of thing ; >

Lynne Russell outshines them all, and she can kick all their asses as well.

In my life as an open-minded gay man, I always have one woman in mind as the only woman I would sleep with, given the chance. Russell filled that role well for several years. (Of course, now that Witchblade has been gone a while, I have to seek a new candidate.)

Rearranging the letters of 'Undercurrents with Wendy Mesley' gives:

so what if her journalism career started when I was still in diapers? Hubba hubba.

(There's been a very odd and somewhat unnatural tone - at least in comparison to what I've come to think of as your 'voice' - to your last several posts on the front page, Miguel. What's with all the tough-guy stuff? I'm curious.)

Funny I just saw Albert Brook's, Broadcast News last night and although the premise is totally outdated (Will network news step over the line to pure entertainment?) I still can't help imagining Jane's (Holly Hunter's character) reaction to all of these semi-nude, pouty and provocative news anchor photos.

Heh. If this were a Fark post it would have the little boobies tag next to it...

When she lived here, Anita McNaught was widely rumoured to be gay - so don't get your hopes up, lads. Or alternatively, good news, girls!

She DID look hot in black leather, I must say.

She and another Pom, Phil(?) Schofield, basically talked their way into plum broadcasting jobs in NZ on thin CVs and then were able to parlay their experience into the comparative bigtime of the Beeb. We were suckers for Received Pronunciation then. Still, Kiwis do the same thing in reverse, when we travel so good on them I say.

From Lynne Russell's bio: (thanks troybob)

Yet Lynne's world is more than meets the eye. For years she has successfully balanced her journalism career and motherhood with her other "occupations": deputy sheriff in Fulton County (Atlanta) Georgia as a jail officer, and licensed private investigator. She holds two black belts in the martial art Choi Kwang Do, and is a certified open water SCUBA diver.

All of this prompted her to write her inspirational first book, How to Win Friends, Kick Ass and Influence People (Dec. 1999, St. Martin's Press).

Any chance the Columbia School of Journalism will be sponsoring a Jell-o Wrestling match between her and Giselle Fernandez anytime soon? I can dream.
