Well, crap. I just tried it again, and there is something wrong. Damn. I lay myself down for the eventual stoning, via here or MeTa.

It's not your fault that the Bush-Cheney machine is incompetent and unable to produce anything worthwhile.

I just tried:

and it didn't work.

It only works in Windows/IE with popups unblocked. It pops a PDF open, which you have to take a screenshot of. Here's one I just whipped up:

Many more here.

Heh, I saw this on Wonkette and was on my way to post it here. Apparently it blocks "Hitler", but they say you can get around that by using the freeform "Town" field. ;)

Still more here.

I don't get what I am requesting. I tried to make "ruining the economy" and got "People who don't learn from their mistakes". Fun.

Interesting that "Natural Resources" is listed under "Coalition Groups."

And when I looked at "Firefighters" and "First Responders" really quickly, they morphed into "Fistfighters."

Has anyone bothered to try different encoding schemes for words that have been rejected? The site looks like its broken (again). I'd like to try the hex/UTF-8 encoded versions of various words to see if they make it through...

As has usually been the case this election cycle, this sign-creating tool was started by the Dean web site. As early as last summer one could create their own Dean signage through an app like this.

Peter H comes into his own in this thread. Damn funny. (oh, except for the super offensive "Retard Helmet" comment"), but that sucking the life force out of that lady is gold.

Peter H, you're missing the point entirely. It's not making fun of the headers, it's the automated sign maker that is the subject of this post.

... It accepted my text ("We are not men, we are Devo!"), but the poster it generated contained someone else's message ("Drag queens for...")....

Sounds like they're using Microsoft's .Net CMS... I worked on the recently redone Canadian website for a "Seriously Huge International Food Manufacturer With Lots Of Well Known Brands," where we had the same problem. By default, the server caches the form content that gets submitted, so that everyone can share in your data.

It's funny when it's drag queens; not so when it's some mother's personal information being broadcast to the world (at least if you're one of the programmers on the project, wondering why the hell the server is doing what it's doing).

mathowie - yes, sorry for the de-rail. but the headers have -both- the logo generated by the poster generator -and- photos. how could i resist? that and, like cr.davis, i couldn't get the sign maker to work and had to go grass-roots.

I gotta hand it to you people... you take the anti-Bush, Bush-bashing shenanigans to the extreme... all day, every day, and never seem to tire of it. It's impressive, yet sad and a little frightening in a way.

[This is good]

oop, plemeljr's link works! on OSX at least. ha, this is fun! and a vector file of this logo is very priceless! (apologizes again for distracting the thread and leaves to go make posters ..giggling)

Hey, we all know you can open a PDF file and edit it (text, addtl art, etc) anyway you want in Illustrator, right? So if a phrase gets turned down, just get one that works to get the PDF then edit however you see fit in illustrator. You can rasterize a pdf and alter it in photoshop, too, if you don't have illustrator that is. Just open the file directly through Photoshop and have fun.

I found just typing in the word 'ham' gets you the file.

How is retard an offensive word if we're not calling "retarded people" retarded anymore? Doesn't that free up the word retard for open use?

BTW, Wonkette is keeping track of those cases where you submit one thing and it spits out another... some have a zen-like profundity. Others, not so much.

How is retard an offensive word if we're not calling "retarded people" retarded anymore?

Because getting offended works oddly for some people: it's like a point-based game in which the person who has been offended the most can be determined to have proven his or her sensibilities to be beyond reproach. And like other popular pastimes with no real-world value, they seem to play simply "for the love of the game."
