SandwichGirl is (was?) a "dining attendant" at the McMurdo Station in Antarctica. She also keeps an intermittent journal, and takes pictures. Fun, wacky stuff.

A friend of mine just got back from crewing a research vessel to Antarctica. Now I really want to see if he's in her pictures, but the site is being hammered.

Yeah, but it's a dry cold tommasz. It's not like the bitter San Franciscan winters for instance.

Substrate, dry isn't the word for it -- static electricity is a real problem for electronic equipment because of the constantly heated dry air.

Reading some of the linked and second-order-linked weblog stuff, I'm envious - if I were a little younger and a lot more single and childless, I'd try to go to Antarctica for a year even if it were only to sweep floors and scrub toilets. This looks like tremendous fun!

I came across Sandwitchgirl's stuff when going through my own obsessional period with all things polar. Sadly her tales made Antartica seem the next hipster destination (off next to Laos, darling -- see you at the gift shop, I mean the beach...)

Perhaps I'm just bitter towards such "and THEN I went to..." people for screwing things up before I get there.
