This photo, of a father carrying his two sons, just made me cry - really hit me hard, like a sucker-punch. That's what these pictures should do. Thanks for calling this out, marx.

This image led me to this story.

I am not thankful enough for my fortuitous life.

Every year these awards astonish and depress in equal measure. Actually, mainly depress.

Botono9 -- Good find.

"Self-immolation has an unsavoury place in the histories of several Asian countries, as a form of female suicide."

You'd really think they could find a less painful way of killing themselves, but it appears there's so much sublimated anger that perhaps it must be a cathartic release.

"Behind the increase, says Ms Afzali, is a disillusionment felt by many educated Afghan women because the two years since the fall of the Taliban have brought precious little freedom. This is felt most among former refugees who returned from Iran and who had grown accustomed to a freer life there."

You read that? Freer in Iran. Sounds like it would have been a better choice to democratize than the shitholes we opted for instead.

Apologies for the derail, these are amazing photos.

One thing: that general news 1st place photo has me a bit confused. Is the lower half of his chest burned badly, or was he torn in half and that's a make-shift "torso" for the wake?

I don't see the appeal of this, especially in comparison to this masterpiece. Collina is up with Mandela in being above all criticism.

I don't see the appeal of this

When I first saw this photo, I thought it was a man looking in a mirror. I had to read the caption to understand that the "man" was W and the "reflection" was Blair. An eerie candid shot.

I can't believe that, after 20 years or so, the guy is still taking pictures of that red couch.

Civil_Disobedient, his torso is badly burned and arms are missing: "Ali Ismail, aged 12, is tended by a distant relative in the Al-Kindy hospital in Baghdad, unaware that the rocket blast which mutilated him killed both his parents, his brother, and 11 other relatives." there was a leter feelgood story about this boy getting advanced medical help in America.

I prefer this portrait of Collina.

I don't see the appeal of this,

I thought it one of the most effective pictures on the site.

Holy shit, did nothing good happen in the world last year?

gottabefunky - Sure, lots of things did. But, unfortunately, "news" is, by its very nature, usually bad.
