Lovely: the only problem being that 95% of weblogs end up in the "Personal" category. And that the blog format is, almost by definition, resistant to Yahoo-esque catgorisation.

A cute idea might be to organise blogs by completely arbitrary categories (Borges comes to mind). Scrabble scores; the Dewey decimal catalogue; background colours. Because that's more likely to encourage serendipity than lumping the vast majority of sites in the "Journal and Links" category.

Yes, the "Personal" category needs some kind of division (no matter how arbitrary), but this directory is good for more topically-oriented weblogs like my own D&D site.

I think the better way to break down the "Personal" category would be by a different sort of classification - one that's never been tried before - personality. Each applicant has to take a personality test (administered by The Spark).

Categories could included things like - Neurotics, Narcissists, Hypochondriacs, Obsessive Compulsives, and of course those boring "normal" people...

Pattiann, check out Ghost in the Machine's classification of weblogs by color, or ptypes who uses Myers-Briggs personality classification. It's OK as far as it goes, and I've found -- for example -- that I don't necessarily like other blogs of my color (brown), nor do I even have a clear preference, except that I don't seem to like many in red, yellow, or orange.

I think holgate's point about serendipity is good. I try to use that -- I regularly peruse the blog rankings or the side lists of my read blogs for new entries that I haven't seen before. I do try to add one or two new ones to my SHF list on a regular basis -- I don't necessarily keep them all forever, but they pop up there when updated so I can choose to check them out depending on my level of interest at that time.

Um...is blog start running a little slowly at the moment? Only I registered some of my blogs a while ago and they don't seem to have come up? Maybe this isn't the best place to mention it but if Zannah is overworked I don't want to add any more distress.

What I want to know is why my site (plug plug) never makes these lists. *sobbing*

I'm guessing because you haven't added it, but that's just a shot in the dark. :-)
