Or so it would appear.

That's no moon....

[/had to be said]

With as many wonders we find in our own solar system, it boggles me to ponder how many more exist outside of it, knowing how incomprehensibly large the universe is. Thanks for the link, whoever you are. ;-)

How cool is that?

Cassini has also found the pre-Kubrick Monolith.

WolfDaddy: note NASA's headline for the caption.

It's been a shitty day, but that made me smile. Thanks. Very cool.

it's so nice to be reminded of the little things (childhood movies) that bring people through years of schooling just so that some day you can repay the favor by making a smartass reference that few people will get. That said, i'm so totally jealous and laughing my ass off for the person who managed to place that subtitle....brilliant.

great link

This exact joke is already in the Niven-Pournelle novel "Footfall".

I have a bad feeling about this.

the person who managed to place that subtitle....

What subtitle????
posted by protocool at 7:23 PM on July 27, 2004

The "That's no space station" sub-title before the article begins, presumably.

brownpau: Where's the monolith?
posted by bingo at 8:00 PM on July 27, 2004

Look at the size of that thing!
posted by Busithoth at 8:09 PM on July 27, 2004

bingo: in the novel of _2001_, the monolith was on Iapetus, not in orbit around Jupiter. IIRC, it was smack in the middle of the white side, like a weensy pupil in a whacking great eye.

Or maybe it was just Iapetus itself. Can't recall.

Why are we still moving towards it?

Apparently we're also sending music to Titan, which seems kooky - but nice anyway!

I want to live on the moon. All that Heinlein and Pohl growing up I guess.

The current residents would pull your pants down and spank you with moon rocks. Sure, they'd teach you how to make a shiv out of a bedpost, but then you'd smoke and pass out in the REALLY hot sun. Stay on earth.

ROU: I read it. But I don't see a monolith in that photo, or even a speck that might be one.
