Beautiful flash and a worthy project -- interesting to see the different things people write on their leaves (including mash notes; better than scratching their initials into real bark).
The 2003 fpp said NEC will only plant trees according to signatures received until Christmas '03, but the site says they project runs until December 2004, although it may be cancelled at any time. 609 trees have been planted so far this year, apparently.

I hate it when corporations sponsor things like this.
The Eddie Bauer store here in Victoria unfailingly asks you if you'd like to add $2 (I think it is) to your bill so that they can plant a tree. What do they put your purchase in? A humungous paper bag.

So, they give you a shot at replacing the bag you've just used, instead of just wasting the bag like every other store does... and this is somehow bad?

In terms of ozone renewal, wouldn't it be more productive to regenerate our lost algae and wetlands?

Yes. It's smoke and mirrors and 'feel-good' marketing. It has nothing whatever to do with sustainability.
Forests have a more important function in the environment that simply supplying Eddie Bauer's with cheap packaging material.

The tree is beautiful, and so are the messages. (Good example of how an interface influences content posted through it.) And I really dig the music. It's like being at Epcot center, only much better. (Though I did just drink some tapwater...)

I agree with Tlogmer -- the sort of effortless artfulness and good design I'd think to find in a science center artist-in-residence project.
