I'd probably give Durst a kick in the face.

They don't have that nickelback guy, but they have Fred Durst, so I'm ok with it.
posted by holloway at 9:41 PM on September 6, 2004

They put Conor Oberst over Scott Stapp? That killed it for me.

Although it is nice to see someone else recognize how much the Goo Goo Dolls suck.
posted by amandaudoff at 9:58 PM on September 6, 2004

suck as ggd may, avril's not the only one who wants to ride the rzeznik pony, rawr !

Barely qualified to carry John Lennon's roach clip while both toiled with a grotesquely overrated boy band known as the Beatles, Sir Paul's true colors have reverberated loudly and horribly since Mark David Chapman put a tragic slug in Yoko's hubby. "Band on the Run" could have been written by a third grader, and McCartney's duets with alleged pedophile Michael Jackson -- and the ensuing public pissing match over Wacko Jacko's savvy purchase of the Beatles' catalogue -- cemented McCartney's legacy of poor taste and idiocy.

can't argue with that. in fact i've been dying to see something like that in print since "silly love songs".

of course this list is like every other list that came before it... written by someone who likely wishes he had what it takes but doesn't, and based much more on jaundiced opinion than any sort of expertise.

Lars Ulrich is that far down on the list? No way. Plenty more hate for Lars out there than that!
posted by Melinika at 10:26 PM on September 6, 2004

A fine collection of irritants there, though I'd give Elton John a break -- if you listen to radio, you're rarely forced to hear any of his post-'84 or so stuff. (Even with "Candle in the Wind," I just hear the Marilyn one now.) And he's still a great philanthropist and fun dresser.

If this had been compiled in Chicago instead of St. Louis, I'm guessing Dave Matthews would have ranked a little higher.
posted by lisa g at 10:26 PM on September 6, 2004

Scott Stapp and Lars should have been ranked far higher (now they're only on the "honorable mention" list).

I know -- know -- this is pointless, because, yes, my favorite band (not the Goo Goo Dolls) sucks too, but seriously, I'd love to hear someone actually take apart a ggd song. Take Slide, or Name, or Iris, because I thought they were pretty good. But what do I know, I thought the Beatles were pretty good, and Sting has done some excellent solo work. Sorry that Seely is unable to appreciate it.

Hey, great - because the world needed yet ANOTHER exhaustively researched list of people that some (cough) journalist (/cough) doesn't like. Thank goodness that alternative media is there to "report" stories like this that the big conglomerates won't!

Waste of newsprint and bandwidth.

I like Max Weinberg. He's funny on Conan and he certainly isn't hated. Lars, on the other hand, should be in the top ten with Durst and Rzeznick. Otherwise, I don't care too much about this list.

I actually found myself unable to hate Lars after seeing Some Kind of Monster. Anyone whose father appears to be a benevolent Danish gnome can't be all bad.

This is a joke, right?

I'/m right there with G.E. Smith, Elton John (like his music HATE the man) and Fred Durst (who is among the most irritating as well as hated).

But Jimmy Buffett? Paul McCartney's the most hated man in rock? What about those asshats from Oasis? Christina? William Hung? Madonna? Metallica?

Easy to overlook some low hanging fruit.

He didn't actually type the word, but can't you just see the word "F-A-G" forming in the mind of Mike Seely, in pink neon, as he composed the phrase "key tickler" for his Elton John blurb? Oooh yeah, bile. The road of excess bile leads to the palace of wisdom, as that Tenth Most Hated Man in Poetry said, William Blake.

posted by dobbs at 9:11 AM on September 7, 2004

I like how Melissa Etheridge was counted amoungst the men.

Would it be worth it to do a Most Hated Women in Rock for equality's sake, or could we just write "Courtney Love" 20 times?

Even though I like some of the people on this list, I can understand why some people could hate every one of them. A lot. Especially David Byrne. But MAX WEINBERG? Why? 'Cause he's got a day job? You hate him as much as you hate Elton John, just because the guy is working? This makes no sense.
posted by Faze at 9:27 AM on September 7, 2004

While I think Sammy is just a manifested symptom of the long-and-slow internal ruination of VH, I still have to back up tsar, so don't start the brawl unless you're sure of your posse, Cobra.

;)
posted by zoogleplex at 1:05 PM on September 7, 2004

I'm not going to deny that VH went south pretty badly as the Sammy era dragged on (the three new songs on the compilation they just out out leave me embarassed for everyone involved... "Up for Breakfast" sounds like it was written by a horny 12-year-old), nor that a lot of the David Lee stuff kicks ass; but if I have to, I'll gladly take on all 17,000 of you to defend the honor of 5150.

Besides, Sammy had his own signature mountain bike! And tequila! How cool is that?!?

Sure, G.E. Smith played with Hall & Oates but why not mention his work with David Bowie and Tom Waits? (Or his marriage to Gilda Radner?) Oh yeah, because that would make him cool.

He does have the worst case of Guitar Face ever, though.

Wow, I'm surprised to hear this. Not liking the guy's music is fine, I guess, though I admit I'm a big fan.

But he is, from everything I've seen of the man, unbelievably humble and genuine. I've seen him live numerous times now, own two books by him, three DVDs, have read bunches of interviews. I'd say if I was compiling a list of the least smug and most generally likeable celebrities he'd be right at the top.
