Lookee what Microsoft is giving me as a potential update! (Yeah, I know why it's really there.)

...but I must confess it took me a while to figure out why it's there. Sometimes I'm pretty slow.

Yeah: what is this one all about? Have I missed something?

Just as I, with the English version of IE5.5, can download Chinese and Thai and Slovenian menus, this file gives people with the Chinese or Thai or Slovenian versions of Windows the ability to download English menus.

well, sure, but why is it being offered to *you*?

Yeah, um, why is any of this noteworthy?

I thought it was humorous; sometimes people post things which seem strange, odd and funny here.

Are we confined solely to the deadly serious in this forum?

no, no, I just didn't get it, that's all.

I thought there was a reason it was being offered to you that I wasn't aware of.

is the punchline that you do speak english, so you don't need the menus?

Personally, I thought it amusing that English menus were being offered on an entirely English page.

Rebecca, all updates for a given version of Windows or IE (in this case IE 5.5) are offered to all users of that version, even if they have no use for them. I have no doubt that the Chinese users of IE 5.5 were offered the Chinese menu option when it became available a few months ago. The program which constructs that page (which runs locally, I might mention) bases its decision on whether to present an option on only two things: whether you've already installed it and whether you've used the "customize" page to turn the option off. I haven't yet turned that one off, that's all, and I certainly have no intention of downloading it.

Now that I've had my laugh, I'll use the customize function and disable display of that choice, and it won't appear again.

I do too. Well, at work. It's damn convenient, really, and should something blow up, well, I've got an excuse to spend an afternoon rebuilding my computer. :-)
