I'd like to take the high road snark, make some disparaging comment re. Metafilter turning into "America's Funniest Home Videos", but damn it, maybe it's my dislike of felines, or the opportunity to make bad puns around the concept of the taped up pussy, but it was funny.

Right with you on your verdict Keith, I so wanted to dislike this link, but it was just too funny. As for hurting the cat, use masking tape that has a low tack, not duct tape or something like that. Hell, cats don't consider the suffering when they are pulling butterflies wings off for fun!

Whether or not removing the tape actually hurts the cat (and I imagine that any tape strong enough to produce the desired effect would yank out at least a little fur), this is cruel. I am usually the last person to complain about such things (I am, pretty much, a prick), but you just don't do this to a cat. Or any animal. Put a goofy hat on it, maybe lure it into a paper bag and then carry it around for awhile, but don't mess with it like this. I can't explain why, but this just strikes me as very wrong.
In conclusion, "Shovel to the Head"=teh funni. This=teh crool.

I just tried this with low-stick edging tape. She doesn't care unless its on her paws, and then she just flips it off.
But scotch tape on her paws drives her nuts. I know from experience. She runs when the gift wrap comes out.

the few comments i saw before watching the footage had me cringing right after the tape went on because i was expecting it to be waxed and then cruelly ripped off. but nothing like that happened it was pretty cute its not like they used duct tape or waxed stips. there are plenty of tapes out there that wouldnt cause much dicomfort as far as pulling hairs. the cat was just a little freaked out like cats get. some people around metafilter have a lot of things stuck up there asses but somehow still manage to shit all over threads and ruin the place.

For the record, I've even stuck *duct* tape to my cat, and it didn't even so much as meow when I took it off. The lazy bastard won't even get up and play with string or anything. I was hoping it might do *SOMETHING*, but nope. Not even this gets it going.
BTW: When taking off the duct tape, I didn't feel the usual resistance you get when pulling a band-aid from a person, for example. So, no, it doesn't hurt the thing. Unless it makes them fall into a trance like sleep, like my cat. That might be bad.
