Conflicted Evangelicals Could Cost Bush Votes --(la times) "It's hard for me to say that Christians should be marching against abortion and carrying signs, and then turn around and giving a pep rally for the war in Iraq without even contemplating that hundreds and hundreds of people are being killed on a regular basis over there," Urcavich said. An eyeopening look at how Rove's strategy of getting 4 million more Evangelicals to the polls may not be working as planned.
In The Politics of Piety, at Sojourners, we see the differences between words and deeds: Politicians should be careful about claiming divine endorsement in electoral contests, and American voters should follow this closely. Because in this country we shouldn’t elect presidents (or any other official, for that matter) based on how many Christian rock stars they can line up on a stage, or whether televangelists call the election for them based on "talks" with God, or if they claim their unofficial running mate is Jesus Christ. Any politician who appeals to voters in that way is more than likely trying to deflect attention from their actual record, from what they have done. But talking the God-talk is no replacement for walking the walk.

This post was deleted for the following reason: I agree with the "chill out amberglow" vote.

in Divided by a Common Faith, also in Sojourners, they look at the vast and telling differences bet. American Evangelicals and those in the rest of the world: Sociologist Donald Kraybill of Messiah College offers an important word for American evangelicals who have allowed right-wing fears and nationalistic dreams—rather than teachings of a biblical faith—to shape their Christian worldview. He wrote, "When public piety is surging, Christians must be careful to distinguish between the god of American civil religion and the God revealed in Jesus of Nazareth. The God of...Jesus sends the rain on the just and the unjust. This God urges us to love our enemies, to bless those who curse us.... For this God there is no east or west, no political borders, no pet nations."

How about lay off the Bush/christian-hating FPPs amberglow. I count 14 FPPs made by you in the last 6 weeks that are either anti-Bush or anti-christian. Whatever somebody's opinion, spamming this site with FPPs that have the same old message is just very lame and tunes people out to what you are saying.
