UNPO: All the flavor of regular UN without all the fat. UNPO is a democratic alternative to regular UN. Its members are indigenous peoples, occupied nations, minorities and independent states or territories who have joined together to protect their human and cultural rights, preserve their environments and to find non-violent solutions to conflicts which affect them, with half the sugar and no fat. List of members.

XQUZYPHYR: While that was funny, the fact that I was probably your RA at NYU is funnier. Small world.

All those little places in the Caucuses! It should be noted that in at least a few of these cases, the drive for independence is supported almost entirely by a poorly thought-out post-Soviet Russian policy of trying to maintain regional hegemony, similar to the bothersome Russian involvement in the recent Ukrainian election debacle. Abkhazia, for instance, is propped up entirely by the Russians, mostly as a "fuck you" to the government of Georgia. It has become a lawless smuggling haven: probably one of the world capitols of illicit weapons smuggling.

So take this with a grain of salt.

mr_roboto: The page that brought me to UNPO was The Government of Epirus in Exile, if you're interested. I don't think they're smuggling anything, but they must love Louisiana.

XQUZYPHYR: Nope, the hair is even longer now (and tangled because of the wind).

languagehat: I did a search for www.unpo.org "since the beginning." I'm not sure why it didn't bring up anything. Enjoy the flashback.

I wouldn't dis the UNPO. Hawai'ians, Tatars, and Maori are notoriously tough, and everyone fears the deadly snake people of Nagaland.

Unrepresented Peoples? I'm a liberal American. Can I join?

...occupied nations, minorities...
Do you think us Blue States™ would qualify?
I'm just surprised nobody brought this up earlier... Maybe we are starting to get over it.

on preview: nevermind.

Um...I'm really frightened of Nagaland. Is it a part of Nation States?

I hereby declare the Democratic Republic of Me and You and I'm Not So Sure about You.
