I have no idea who this dude is, but some of us are born with karaoke skills, some of us are not. (Warning: Flash or Quicktime or Something)

That's not karaoke: he's not singing, just lip-synching.

OMG THANK YOU schroedinger! I have been looking all over for that video for WEEKS now!

As a friend commented when I showed that video to her, "It rubs the lotion on it's skin or else it gets the hose again".

*shudder*

This guy is so awesome.

Not in an ironic way. Dude's got moves.

So much worse than badger, badger...and yet so strangely compelling. I will now be washing my eyes and ears out with soap.

What the hell is that song called? I heard it all summer long in Europe, but now that I'm in the US I haven't heard it once.

Simon: I agree. I just about lost it when he suddenly threw his arms up in the air.

Who loves this video?

This guy!

What the hell is that song called?

The man most directly responsible is Miles Bennet Dyson, director of Special Projects at Cyberdyne Systems O-Zone, a boy band from Moldova. The song is called Dragostea din tei. (Love Under the Lime Tree)

So it's Romanian!

My first guess was Brazilian Portuguese, although that didn't fit the music at all.

Mayya hiii!
Mayya huu!
Mayya hoo!
Mayya haha!!

Who exactly is that fat kid video that devil posted? I've always been curious about that.

The best thing about this video is the first few seconds where the guy stretches his mouth out to unhuman proportions. I think he must belong to a subsecies of homo sapiens that can unhinge their jaws and swallow live chickens whole.

It would be better if they didn't have those stupid images flashing over it.

No kidding. I'd say schroedinger pissed on PissOnYourParades's parade...

I recently joined a blog, and chose my country of origin to be Moldova. Now I know why, the Moldovan dudes are so fine. They have all the moves, and can apparently store a years supply of food within their bodies; making them excellent traveling companions. The passion, the passion....

My first newbie comment. Signing up after 4 yrs lurking, but promise not to post stupid FPPs ;)

There was a thread on this same song today on a Japanese site where I found plenty more useless yet related info.

Apparently this song caught on in Japan and spawned numerous flash animations from the likes of 2ch and friends. A few of them.

Also, here is a translation of the lyrics.

And here I thought Romanian was one (and the most unexpectly located) of the Romance languages. Italian, Spanish, and even French are somewhat accessible after my 8 years of Latin study (lo those many years ago), but I couldn't make heads or tails of that.

Dude has moves though... Dude has moves...
posted by socratic at 8:15 AM on January 8, 2005

What's the story of that song? There's a spanish version where the chorus goes "marica tu, marica yo" etc., which means "fag you, fag me". The video is 2 overweight (apparently-) gay men singing the song while a bunch of steroetypical buff leather-men prance around them.
Where does this majestic cultural product originate?

Thanks p3t3, check out the Google ad that appeared under the translated lyrics:

From popbitch:

The biggest record in Europe this year has come
out of Romania. Moldovan boyband O Zone (Dan,
Radu and Arsenie) spend their 9th week in the
top ten with Dragostea Din Tea despite virtually
no press, marketing budget or TV appearances.
In France there are five different versions of the
song in the top 20, and the cover by Haiducci is
itself the fifth biggest record in Europe this
summer.

feh. He's got a profile on Friendster (login req), sort of. A bunch of us had a little thing to see who could find out who he was first. Here's the best we could find out, so far.

modernsquid, the other video was posted here about a month ago, it had a 40ish bald headed man who was really singing the song and prancing about. It was much funnier than this clip and way disturbing.

and WTF is that Fiona Apple clip? Is that her grammy acceptance speech? No wonder she fell off the earth.

Here's one [video] of a guy singing along with that same song. Funny in a stupid way, especially when the guy goes nuts at the end.

Oh, I probably just posted the one daHIFI was referring to.

Let's all post the same video again and again without checking anyone else's links. Actually that's a very funny video.
posted by chrid at 11:18 AM on January 8, 2005

Here's the actual group doing more or less the same thing with slightly higher production values.

Based on this limited sampling I'd say that Romanian boybands are rather less repellant and quite a bit more listenable then the sort we grow 'round here.
posted by George_Spiggott at 11:31 AM on January 8, 2005

and WTF is that Fiona Apple clip?

It's Janeane Garofalo's parody of Fiona Apple's speech at the MTV Video Music Awards.
posted by Armitage Shanks at 11:39 AM on January 8, 2005

That song perfectly sits the fence between extremely catchy versus extremely annoying. I'm gonna have to listen to Yatta to wipe it out of my mind.

I've been told there's a copy of this without those damn random images. Anyone have a link?
posted by punishinglemur at 2:10 PM on January 8, 2005

Punishing Lemur: There was, and IMO it was much funnier. That kid can lipsynch like a mofo, and some of his best, LOL-inducing moments (like the eyebrow move), are ruined by the addition of that yahoo's still frames.

Coolest. Fat Kid on the Internets. Evah. (This week.)

I can't for the life of me get any sound from this Flash thing. How would I fix that?

Oh by the way, I'm hard-of-hearing and very tone deaf; I've heard my attempts at singing are painful to hear. Who wants an mp3?
