Making MORE low-lying islands?!? I guess they ain't afraid of tsunamis and don't believe that global warming will cause sea levels to rise...

I searched for theworld, nakheel, and theemiratesnetwork in both the "Since Day One" search and on Google. If it's a dupe, my deepest apologies, but the word "World" comes up way too often, and I was at a loss of what else to search for.

Although in a panic to point out my own stupidity by searching for Dubai a moment ago instead of when I posted this revealed this post from late last year that mentions the Palm Islands, so I suppose that could be what you were thinking of...

Here's the World.
Here's the Palm.

Do not pass go...

Also...It was the first post brought up on a search for "Dubai".

Not to be confused with "The World" which is apparently a cruise ship that you live on as it tours the world.

I'm not surprised that the Metafilter search fails, but I find it interesting that Google can't find the post that you found with an appropriate search.

I'm glad to know that there are people out there whose sole purpose in life is to remember everything in case Google fails though. As for me, I give up on posting, clearly I'm too fucking dumb.

That is the right attitude, togdon. If in doubt, don't post - imagine the damage done to this precious site. Oh wait, some folks will be bored to death then. Nah, just keep on posting . . .

I'm not sure why you think Google is going to search on "theworld" in a way you like. Googling for world islands seems like a reasonable search and finds the earlier post right away. I humbly submit that your Google-fu needs a training montage.

I hope that's not referring to me, simply because I never remember what's been posted here. I just happened to be interested in the previous post about Dubai and so it stuck in my head, and I happened to remember the words assosiated with the post. With thousands of users, someone is likely to remember whenever anything is posted twice. Also, what fleacircus said about the manner in which you searched is probably correct, if someone did not type in the phrase "theworld" then you may not find what you want.

Sorry if I came across snarky...that was not my intent. Keep posting...

While I find both of these to have some serious issues, (tsunami notwithstanding), I have to say that these are some really cool things to be building.

Interesting that one of those pages had pictures of the luxurious islands, and then a few pictures down, tsunami victims. Unsettling cognative dissonance.

fleacircus' post was enlightening to a degree. I'd always blindly assumed that Google indexed all of the words on a page, whether they were part of a link or not, 'cause that'd be useful. Searching for "world islands" finds the post more by luck than anything else, and I can think of plenty of ways that that strategy would break down.

If someone has a Google search incantation that achieves looking at the text of a page as well as the text of the URLs on a page (I fiddled around with link: and other bits to no avail) I'd be happy to know it.

Sorry if I came across snarky...that was not my intent. Keep posting...

No need to apologize. If you look at my posting history you'll see that almost every one of them is a double post. I was fairly certain that I'd managed to vet this one well, so my comment about being too dumb to post still applies...

The "Eco Resort" Island is priceless in its bad taste. And for anyone who thinks this is cool, this is not Disney World, it is targeted to folks with millions in net worth. The most interesting thing about it is, it takes the gated community meme to a logical extreme -- in the middle of the most dangerous region of the world.

Yes of course: when a search for one word gives too many results it is utter foolishness to add more words of relevance.

Real estate development in Dubai has gone completely off the hook. For instance: along with the Nakheel "Palm" and "World" developments, you'll find "International City" (via gowealthy.com !?!?) and "Dubailand" [.pdf], with meta amusements such as "Themed Leisure and Vacation World".

I wondered about the tsunami issue myself. It seems to me that the Persian Gulf could be regarded as a large harbor, protecting what's inside from disruptions in the Indian Ocean. That's not to say that an earthquake / major land formation collapse / asteroid strike within the Gulf wouldn't erase these silly little sandbars, but the comparatively tiny area of the Gulf makes that relatively unlikely. Rising oceans, on the other hand, will drown these quite nicely, and given that the wealth involved in both building and in purchasing these probably comes disproportionately from oil... well, it's amusing in a sad sort of way.

togdon, Google does index all the words in a page. Normal searches do this, as do searches using the "site:" directive. The page ranking system may weight things differently if keywords show up in links to a page but if only links were indexed then it couldn't do things like this (note the utter absence of links in the resulting page).
