Indeed the song sucks, but the video was hysterical.

It reminds me a lot of "Close-up Animals With a Wide Angle Lens Wearing Hats". Cuuuuuuuute.

This video made me feel all dirty inside.

I had to clean my screen afterwards.

How cute. Someone gave Jean Teasdale a video camera.

I muted it after five seconds, and then I spent the next three minutes laughing. I love this.

Awesome job on that video.

yes, but if you mute it, you miss the meow the kitten makes when the black car bumps into him/her.

Next time someone says something is as hard as herding cats we can all say, "but I've seen it done!"

I still like the cat on the turntable.

Could he look any less excited to be in that video in the beginning?

Oh, and yeah, lame cover, cute video. I love Fatboy Slim, but the times have passed him by. Norman Cook needs a new persona.

Yes, yes we have.

And this was the cutest video e-VAR.

Damn ...Imagine all the pussy he got for making this.

This song was recorded for Levi's originally. They were going to run adverts which featured new cover versions of songs that had gone to number one in the UK after being featured in their ads. That doesn't make this version of The Joker any better though.
I wonder if the cover of Starman (originally by Babylon Zoo) would have been a cover of the original or the Arthur Baker remix that featured in the ad?
As an interesting related fact 'Inside' by 'Stiltskin' was recorded specially for Levis as a song that sounded a bit like Smashing Pumpkins. When the campaign was a huge success they had to get a band together and release a single!
(Wow - my first Metafilter comment!)

I was under the impression that that part of the video was intentionally cringeworthy and the 'contest' was part of the video.

Please tell me that woman was an actress and there really wasn't a contest that resulted in that video.

Google is ambiguous. All of the links seem to be "after the fact" about the video being a contest result with no evidence of an actual contest.

I think it's a brilliant way for him to fulfill a contractual obligation as a recording artist.

With little ducks , little train ..little everything ! So cute it's almost criminal.

Oh, interesting theory. After all, he did a similar thing (brilliantly) with Spike Jonze for "Praise You". Does anyone know anything regarding whether the actual contest is legit?

There's nothing on fatboyslim.net, (don't go there, it's Flash hell), to indicate this is anything more than a straight-up spoof. Only an announcement that the video was released on 7th Jan, and a list of stations playing it. I'm pretty sure this wasn't a home production. I mean, who owns or can rustle that many debauched kittens?

Now THIS is more like it! Cute kittens and baby ducks having fun, now that is wholesome, cute, family entertainment. A lot of these video people now, all they put in there is women's bottoms and extra large hubcaps.

Many of those kittens don't look like they are having fun at all.

Fatboy Slim's newest album was superb; this was by far the worst song on it.

I can't imagine the contest being real. All his videos are tongue-in-cheek. ('Bushes' being my favorite).

This one reminds me of Weezer's Island in the Sun, which still remains the cutest video I've ever seen.

Some of the camera work looks professional. The supers made me think that it was pros making it look like something a crazy cat lady would do. But if an amateur did that kind of shooting and editing, she would have used a better typface [but they really should have used Comic Sans or Hobo to the full effect]. And without a bunch of cat wranglers that would have taken forever.

The kitten dressed as a cop looked more like it should have been in a village people video than a fatboy slim video.

However, this is the best video my cats have ever seen.

Out. Standing. Video.

And punilux, "debauched kittens" is a phrase I plan to steal!

The video has Spike Jonze's cheeky little fingerprints all over it. Oh, and can I just mention that I love kittens? Thanks.

If you want to see more by the makers, it's all at Waverly Films. They rule.
