CIA Says War Helps Recruit Terrorists

CIA Says War Helps Recruit Terrorists (Washington Post). . .The insurgency in Iraq continues to baffle the U.S. military and intelligence communities, and the U.S. occupation has become a potent recruiting tool for al Qaeda and other terrorist groups, top U.S. national security officials told Congress yesterday. "Islamic extremists are exploiting the Iraqi conflict to recruit new anti-U.S. jihadists," CIA Director Porter J. Goss told the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. ... And Rumsfeld, ever Rumsfeld replies "I see these reports. Frankly, I don't have a lot of confidence in any of them."

This is the same Rumsfeld that accuses Al Jazeera of being a lying propaganda machine.

I know which one I trust more.

"Beyond the Euphrates began for us the land of mirage and danger, the sands where one helplessly sank, and the roads which ended in nothing. The slightest reversal would have resulted in a jolt to our prestige giving rise to all kinds of catastrophe; the problem was not only to conquer but to conquer again and again, perpetually; our forces would be drained off in the attempt."

Frankly, I don't have a lot of confidence in Rumsfeld. One of the worst SecDefs in many decades. Much blood is on his incompetent hands.

"Robert S." Rumsfeld -- on a mission to salvage McNamara's reputation, at least in comparison.

From one really bright unfeeling technocrat to another!

That CIA! Full of liberal commies!

The scariest part of this is that I know dozens of people who'll read this report and say, "This is just silly. I know more about terrorism and the state of Iraq than this 'CIA' does."

Well, I don't see how we are supposed to convince the American people to continue funding a War on Terrorâ„¢ when there are no terrorists. From a marketing standpoint, this makes perfect sense. I've underestimated this guy Bush. He is a genius of epic proportions!

You should read the report on the defecation of bears. Damn, that's some surprising stuff. Here we were thinking Rumsfeld's skull, and it was the woods all the time. Maybe it's bulls instead. We'll have to wait for further reports.

There isn't much he (WaPo) does know. Or at least willing to say

When the ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, Rep. Ike Skelton (Mo.), asked about the number of insurgents in Iraq, the secretary said, "I am not going to give you a number for it because it's not my business to do intelligent work." (He presumably meant to say "intelligence.")

I'm not seeing the point of Rummy's comments.

The ultimate point I mean. The war in Iraq...I mean, the counterinsurgancy (since major combat operations are over - mission accomplished) ... isn't going well?
Wasn't there a vote, etc?

Why then deny conflict spurs on the extremeists (Hell, we see it here on Metafilter)

...Isn't denying basic common sense a sign of madness?

(Not that I'm a Porter Goss fan)
