Characters of similar appearance can be used to replace the letters they resemble. For example, "5" or even "$" can replace the letter S.

I don't remember "woot" ever being an acronym, and I first saw "woot" typed nearly twenty years ago. I'm pretty sure that the First Person Shooter realm - I'm assuming that's the claimed source - can't claim to have invented it.

As far as my crusty, crufty old geek brain recalls, it is an exclamation, but probably not shorthand for "woohoo". I'm dubious about it being an acronym. This sounds like one of those reverse acronyms, where something was made up after the original use and meaning was "lost".

loquaicious truly living out his namesake :P

I can't believe microsoft has this article posted under "Safety". The link between this sort of behavior has more in common with general technological retardation, overuse of chat rooms and faux h@x0r skills than actual compromising of microsoft's hole-y software(s).

Wait, am i allowed to say that under the most current MS EULA?

The Internet isn't the thing that's messing our kids up so much. It's thins Nintendo Z-Box crap I keep hearing about! Madden this, Madden, that! I thought he only did football? It's not enough to get the youngsters the games they want, but they want to talk to each other while playing to! So that the TV set acts like a phone!

HAVE YOU HEARD SOME OF THE LANGUAGE THEY USE ON THEIR NINTENDO Z-BOX MACHINES? It's downright disgusting! I wouldn't even talk to my own parents like that!

And when you get them their games, of course THAT'S NEVER ENOUGH. THEY HAVE THE NERVE TO TELL YOU THEY NEED ALL-NEW VERSIONS OF THE SAME GAMES YOU BOUGHT THEM BECAUSE THE ONE YOU GOT THE BEFORE WAS LAST YEAR'S VERSION. I mean, what, these things are like food now? They get stale in a few months, and you can't use them? No wonder children are so screwed up!

Thus, the word "ham" could be written as "|-|4/\/\."

I honestly believe no one has ever rendered the word "ham" like that before.

I never did understand it, so this was helpful. I still don't understand why anyone would take the time to type like that. I must be way older than my 31!

The first series [of leetspeek words] is of particular concern, as their use could be an indicator that your teenager is involved in the theft of intellectual property, particularly licensed software.

Obviously much more concerning than, oh I don't know, your kid being groomed online by a paedophile or something...

Hadn't thought about it before, but you're right, people were saying "woot!" to refer to that Arsenio Hall call back in 1989.
