"There are very few literary scholars who have recognised the potential link between Shakespeare and hallucinogenic stimuli."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought marijuana was not a hallucinogen.

I suppose Shakespeare wouldn't be the first, or last, artist to be inspired by visions gained in drug use. (Coleridge was notorious for it.) But I can already hear the fundies crying for bans on teaching Shakespeare in high schools, fearing it will cause drug use.

Plus - do we really need to know this sorta stuff? Why will some people not be satisfied until all great artists are debunked in some way? What purpose does that serve?

snakey, do you go to the university of new mexico?

Very silly story - must be a slow day at the Beeb or something. Not that there haven't been spliff smokers in London since before then - an ancient bag of grass was found in a Roman or pre-Roman site a while ago. But this is just pointless - it's not like they've even got Shakey's actual pipe...

dnash, going back to that comment on marijuana not being a hallucinogen. I personally think it's a hallucinogen, albeit a mild one. But then again, that super skunky ultra-sticky sinsemilla weed is a pretty trippy smoke -- or so I'm told.

Grow your own film? I thought marijuana users were trying to distance themselves from the dirty grungy phish hippy stereotype.

Some understood that, some did not.

How exactly does growing your own marijuana make you 'dirty' or 'grungy' ? If anything, you are helping to stamp out the mexican mafia -- and you're keeping that new genetically modified fungus (that the USA is spraying in other countries) OUT of the nation's weed supply.

And not all of us want to distance ourselves from the hippie/social movements of the '60s. Some even embrace it. It really depends on the type of marijuana user. Many of us are proud of our hippie/activist roots.

And why is suggesting that Shakespeare might have partaken of that magical weed, marijuana, "debunking"? It's an interesting aside, that's all. In a perfect world, every artist would be able to publicly acknowledge their debt to psychoactives. *)

In the spirit of Shakespeare, it was a play on words, snakey - it was not serious, nor was it attacking anything about you, or hippies, or marijuana, or anything.

I took what you said about the "Grow your own" film fest and pretended to interpret it as "Grow your own film" -- as in -- film -- like, bathroom film. My initial post was going to read something along the lines of:

"Hey - grow your own film? I got a wicked shower curtain I could enter into that contest."

Maybe I should have gone that route. Everything clear? Did I explain that better?

ahhh . . . OK! Sorry about the misunderstanding. I'll smoke you out sometime.

Marijuana is a true hallucinogen - as opposed to LSD, which is a pseudo hallucinogen. If you're familiar with psychedelics then you might have noticed how "shrooming" produces real hallucinations in all five senses, whereas LSD produces constantly shifting visual pseudohallucinations.

When I say "pseudo", I'm just repeating scientists, I'm not trying to tell you you didn't really see Jesus the last time you fried.

Funny, the only creative ability I've ever seen "enhanced" by marijuana has been the ability to tell idiotic stories about stupid things people did while they were stoned.

Harmful, I think part of the problem you see is that some people don't use pot responsibly. If the climate surrounding pot were different, we could educate our society to use marijuana in moderation, and we'd see a lot fewer folks that bake themselves into the stupor you're talking about.

Jeepers, here I am confronted with 372 new messages and a bag of weed in front of me, thinking "Nah, I don't wanna smoke tonight..." when I stumble across this thread.

It's a sign. Or something. An excuse? AWRIGHT!

(warning: 2 days of being locked in a room with 4 other geeks rebuilding a bloated database on paper makes cCranium a little more... peculiar... than normal. I apologize in advance for the rapid stupidity I'll be a part of what with all the fun election coverage)

This is a thread snakey and I can agree on. :) There is a big difference between "use" and "abuse." Don't lump all the numskulls who do nothing but sit around smoking themselves into a stupor and watch TV all day in with people who are responsible smokers. Generalities and stereotypes are rarely accurate.

Legalize all plant life!
