Self linking is bad? I just put it together with a friend... Thought it was funny and wanted to share... Didn't mean to break some kind of norm here...

You suck! Gore as a Khan is funny, but the rest of it smells bad.

Self linking is bad?

Go take a look at the second para and think about what you've done.
posted by infidelpants at 1:57 PM on April 5, 2005

And on the posting page, the Almighty mathowie had written:

"Note: You read the guidelines, right? Because linking to your own site in this space will result in a deletion and your account will be banned."

And salminen still posted a link to a site, and it was bad.

Prepare to be bannanated.

Hmmm.. Didn't read those guidelines carefully enough. My mistake. Not trying to make any money or anything. Just thought it was funny. Apparently y'all don't, so ban away...

MMMMmmm.... Banananation!!

It did make me chuckle a little, tho..

Post a Link to MetaFilter:
Found something cool on the web and want to share it with everyone else? Great! Just fill the blanks and it'll go live. A sample link is shown below. If this is your first post, please read the guidelines.

Note: You read the guidelines, right? Because linking to your own site in this space will result in a deletion and your account will be banned.

before this gets pulled...the idea is that someone else finds it funny Salminemineminem. Of course you think it's funny (although I must admit I liked the one about fetus powered cars).
posted by j.p. Hung at 2:18 PM on April 5, 2005

Too bad you had to self-link. I did think it was pretty funny though.

Democrats are proposing tougher environmental standards for the auto industry, focusing on low emission vehicles that run entirely on fetuses

If salminen was actually trying to put one over on us, he probably wouldn't have openly linked to it in his profile. Sounds like an honest mistake?

Here's another tip: "Onion-like" ain't gonna win you any awards, either.

("Yes, I knew the horse was already dead, officer. I just needed to adminster a beating, and the horse made an awfully convenient target.")
posted by pardonyou? at 2:25 PM on April 5, 2005

Sounds like an honest mistake?

actions don't have to be thoughtfully malicious to be worthy of bannination. This cannot be described as anything but the strongest willful ignorance as self-linking is basically the only hard & fast rule around this place.

And the link was what might be called "perfectly ordinary" - as soon as I clicked it, it was obvious it was a self-link, because no one else would link to such a mundane, amateur site (major typos on the front page, etc) except the kid who'd thrown it together. Not that it was terrible, but MeFi's not s'posed to be "The Not Terrible of the Web"...

Dumb. But the domain name is funny, and has some potential.
posted by bwilliams at 2:39 PM on April 5, 2005

Yeah, if we get to vote at all, I would vote against bannination (simple post removal would suffice, I think) if this truly was simply an honest mistake.
posted by Yellowbeard at 2:47 PM on April 5, 2005

While I can believe it was an honest, if mind-bogglingly dense, mistake, I can't in good conscience defend it. I have a personal rule that anyone who describes their own output as "Onion-like" loses.

I'd like to give the benefit of the doubt, but I really have trouble seeing that this is an honest mistake: the self-link rule is just about the only rock solid guideline here, and it's called out both in the guidelines and on the page where you make the post right above where you make the actual post. The fact that before this he had made just enough comments to get posting rights also makes me suspicious.

At absolute best, this was someone who doesn't understand what Metafilter is, and couldn't be bothered to find out.

Hey, you know what? I like this post. Because it reminded me that there's a new _Onion_ out today.

This _Onion_, yes, it vibrates.

Banning is overrated. I propose we just type in every single Metafilter cliche we know. That should be sufficient punishment - not just for salminen, but for all of us.

I, for one, welcome our new self-linking overlords.

Fair enough... It was an honest mistake... Otherwise, I obviously wouldn't have set it as my homepage or used the same name here as appears in the whois record.. But, you're right, I should have read the rules more carefully... Ban if you like... Thanks to those few of you that liked it nonetheless... :)

Come on, this was much better than last week's bananation, that LaShawn chick. If I had a vote, which obviously I don't have, I would give him a chance: new user, got all excited to post his first FPP, never read the rules. Make it a tradition: forgive one self-linker everytime a Pope dies.

Bwhahahahhaa!

That's a funny one. Come on now. Which of you jokers registered the "salminen" account?

Just thought it was funny. Apparently y'all don't, so ban away...

Banning isn't based on non-funny self-linking, it's any self-linking (with scattered, limited exceptions).
posted by scarabic at 3:55 PM on April 5, 2005

Yeah, I don't think Salminen needs to be banned - but this thread should be zapped from the front page.

He'll think twice before he self links again... lesson learned and all that.

Course, it is shitty that he stole graphics from the Onion website...

Yeah, we did take those graphics from The Onion. Really the whole format is taken from The Onion. I think of it as a tribute to what is probably the most consistently funny site on the web.
