Hell House: The Ghosts of Maryland Many say the place is haunted. Others used talk of satanic altars or drug labs hidden within the cavernous old building. And... people sacrificing goats? Well, not really. These are just rumors surrounding the old St. Mary's College in Ilchester, stories passed around among teenagers from all over the region. The students have a different name for the old seminary too: "Hell House."

Excellent post! But really, growing up in Elkton I have to say that the rednecks were much scarier than any ghosts.

Isn't Ellicott City where the Enchanted Forest was?

The Enchanted Forest is still there, but it's closed now.

I have to say that Maryland is the unlikeliest of states for ghosts.

I'd imagine every state in the union has its own share of stories; my home state is no exception. I remember back in the 1980s there were rumors of a little girl ghost in Six Flags Over Texas who could be seen near the railroad tracks by the Chapparal cars. She'd also hang around a lot in the candy store closest to that railroad station. After they built the Texas Giant there, the rumors faded away.

I've been dragged there kicking and screamng in the middle of the night. I was pretty scared at the bottom of the hill too.

We were constantly chased off by the caretaker, and then we would walk the train bridge over the Patapsco to a tunnel where there were also satanists ready to consume our souls. Luckily the guys with us were always drunk on grain and had lots of firecrackers to set off and chase away the bad guys.

And Antietam is one of America's Most Haunted Battlefields.

It's always the caretaker. I bet if you searched his shack you'd find the phosphorescent paint he used to make glowing footprints, and maybe a slide projector and an old record player.
